March 4, 2017. My Stint as a Ski Patroller (and Thursday Night Offender). Fat snowflakes swirl and fall around me in clusters. I feel like I’m moving through the center of a shaken snow globe. The effect is dizzying as I ski in the direction of my first wreck of the day (slang for an accident) towing an orange rescue toboggan behind me. In it are a backboard, oxygen, and not much else. I say, taking note of his measured breathing and that he’s holding his left side below the ribs with his right hand.

April 19, 2016. There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed. And then it dawned on me: that’s why I write. I prefer distraction. With writing I have the opportunity to be transported into someone else’s world. And, for a short time, borrow from their circumstances. Through words I find meaning in a trifling piece scheduled for a marketing rubric in a trade magazine. And, in prose, I find the motivation to continue even when tomorrow initially feels a little dim.

First Sentences are Important | Cathleen Calkins

February 27, 2017. First Sentences are Important. Our brain is hard-wired for story. Great first sentences drag me into an author’s space and, word-by-word, propel me to the end. There are so many examples out there but the following reads this week reminded me of why I love great first sentences. My grandmother was a mountain. From Carmen Maria Machado’s long-form essay “The Trash Heap Has Spoken: the power and danger of women who take up space.”). Biff America (who doesn’t love Biff America) in. You ar...

Airstream Nomad: November 2009
http://airstreamnomad.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html
Pursuing an iconic life one adventure at a time. Friday, November 20, 2009. Getting to Know a New Town. It's been a while since I have moved. I have been in the same town for seven years now. For some of us, probably not a big deal. But ask either of my parents and they will tell you for years they never wrote my address or phone number in pen - they preferred something they could easily erase when a year or less went by. Nomadic Yogini: August 2008

Lessons Learned On and Off the Mat. Thursday, August 28, 2008. I don't do this often, but let me get on my. For a moment. First, I need to take my shoes off - I want to connect with the wood, feel the grain beneath my soles, and I'm a clutz. Ahem Why Yoga Rocks! Yoga opens tight areas like the hips, shoulders and neck. It works on the connective tissue - the ligaments and fascia. This helps us maintain a youthful flow in our movements even as we age. Okay - so you're screaming at the computer - But what ...
Airstream Nomad: Halloween Sun

Pursuing an iconic life one adventure at a time. Saturday, October 31, 2009. I celebrated with a visit to my new favorite yoga studio Mountain Moon Yoga (mtnmoonyoga.com). A fairly vigorous vinyasa sequence with plenty of salutations was a great way to stretch, sweat, twist and relax. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Airstream Nomad: Adventure-less
http://airstreamnomad.blogspot.com/2010/06/adventure-less.html
Pursuing an iconic life one adventure at a time. Monday, June 28, 2010. It's hard to have an adventure blog when you aren't really doing anything particular adventurous. Just the normal - slaving for the mortgage, getting in some mountain biking, hiking, kayaking when I have a free morning or evening and before summer disappears. Working the 9 to 5 patiently counting the minutes until my next adventure. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. My Favorite Spots on the Net.

Airstream Nomad: Life is Good!
http://airstreamnomad.blogspot.com/2009/10/life-is-good.html
Pursuing an iconic life one adventure at a time. Friday, October 16, 2009. It's crazy how time flies. That I have gone this long without blogging seems unforgiveable. Except that - and this is good news - I've been busy. Seriously busy. Writing and photographing mostly, augmented with skills learned in the corporate world. A good thing really - my parents did pay (with help from my job as a grocery checker) for an expensive education and it proves useful once in awhile. What am I up to? The temporary abs...
Nomadic Yogini: September 2008
http://nomadicyogini.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html
Lessons Learned On and Off the Mat. Monday, September 8, 2008. A question of convenience. In July I joined the food co-op Suzie Lerma with Sol Food Market set up. When I first heard there was a co-op, I wasn't sold on the idea but wanted to support Suzie and her efforts to provide our small town with wholesome, organic and healthy foods. The farmer, also named Doug, ducks under a clothes line of white cotton tee-shirts and greets us. Saturday, September 6, 2008. Over the Handle Bars. I LOVE mountain biki...
Airstream Nomad: Slow Food Cooking
http://airstreamnomad.blogspot.com/2009/11/slow-food-cooking.html
Pursuing an iconic life one adventure at a time. Monday, November 16, 2009. Having grown up with a garden in our back yard, I was tasked with picking our evening salad right before dinner. I miss that freedom and sufficiency. Living in a mountain town where our soil is not entirely conducive for growing our own vegetables I rely heavily on our local food cooperative - Sol Food Market. Every Tuesday I pick up produce grown within 100 miles of Big Bear. It's very communal. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
Airstream Nomad: May 2009
http://airstreamnomad.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html
Pursuing an iconic life one adventure at a time. Friday, May 29, 2009. You know it was a rough day when your 2 1/2 year old Golden struggles back to the car and then settles for only enough shade so he can close his eyes. "I think we broke him," I comment to no one in particular. I was tired too, perhaps even broken, but happily settled in the grass to enjoy the beer we had buried in the snow. Links to this post. Tuesday, May 12, 2009. Confessions of a Reluctant Rock Climber. Up for a class through SCMA.
