SRL Progress | Plugged in English

Wednesday, March 04, 2015. Today, Educator Innovator profiled PBS Student Reporting Labs. I read the article with great interest as this year, for the first time, my Digital Writing Workshop is an SRL lab. This class has always been heavily imbued with technology, but our partnership with PBS has changed its essence. I have never pictured this DWW as a journalism class - more of a digital storytelling class. We've always done projects other than documentary style features. 169; 2013 Plugged in English.

Thursday, February 26, 2015. Today was the proverbial calm before the storm. Tomorrow my freshmen officially start their podcasts. Today we went over a rubric and took a look at the voice recording apps on their IOS and Android devices. I shared hints and tricks for putting together a quality podcast. Then, some time to play around with Garageband before the bell rung. One Big. Differentiated. Fun. Mess-aroo. 169; 2013 Plugged in English.

Is Social Media Marketing in the Classroom Worth It? | Plugged in English
http://www.pluggedinenglish.com/2015/03/is-social-media-marketing-in-classroom.html
Is Social Media Marketing in the Classroom Worth It? Wednesday, March 18, 2015. I just don't know. Is social networking worth it in the classroom? I've had class Facebook pages. I've created (and deleted) a personal "school only" Twitter account to communicate with my students. I've used hashtags to promote social networking conversation amongst students about our work. Always, it feels like shouting into the wind. But, does it bang? What events do you cover? What is our purpose? Are we just boasting?

Mess vs. Structure: Thinking Through Digital Writing Workshop | Plugged in English
http://www.pluggedinenglish.com/2015/03/mess-vs-structure-thinking-through.html
Mess vs. Structure: Thinking Through Digital Writing Workshop. Thursday, March 05, 2015. Though my DWW class is growing as a Student Reporting Lab, I still have some structural things I am still thinking through. Production based workshops are messy. We started the year messy. Students identified topics they would be interested in investigating. They formed groups, interviewed people and cobbled together short documentaries (check them out on our Youtube channel. 169; 2013 Plugged in English.

Rehearse. Oh! Must Revise! | Plugged in English

Friday, February 27, 2015. Podcast Armageddon did not occur. I was not inundated with cries for help. I did not have to troubleshoot a million different tech issues. During my first period, I laid out the three scenarios for my kids. "Some of you have voice-over with you. Some of you must record. Some of you need to rehearse and print.". Well, everyone had to rehearse and print. 169; 2013 Plugged in English.

A World Without Teachers. Monday, March 02, 2015. I was just cruising through the "Connected Learning" section in my Feedly and came across this interesting project via Educator Innovator. Seems Project Ed and Participant Media are running a contest. Inviting creators to produce a two-minute film (or less) depicting a world without teachers. The intention is to show what the world would look like without good teachers' the film would serve to inspire future teachers. 169; 2013 Plugged in English.

Intermittent Reading Time | Plugged in English

Tuesday, March 03, 2015. That's the thing with independent reading. If time is not regularly built into the schedule it loses its power. But, it's hard to build it into the schedule and focus on other things. 169; 2013 Plugged in English.
