Charnwood Ringers (Leicestershire)

Sunday, 18 February 2018. Andy has been working with Forestry Commission in the National Forest for some time now. This has included general conservation work but also bird ringing. Two of the fields at one site are superb in the winter for Snipe and related species, so it was time to organize a mist net session to catch and ring the visiting waders. I also posted the above image on Twitter; it has already received over 36,000 views! Thursday, 12 October 2017. Lovely Treecreeper (note the long stiff poin...

Charnwood Ringing Group: Blackcap returns.

http://charnwoodringers.blogspot.com/2015/04/blackcap-returns.html

Wednesday, 22 April 2015. I only caught one bird this morning at Thornton, but it was an old friend! At first I thought it might be a second summer bird returning from last year. There was some brown in the head. Not obvious in this image , but certainly in the one below. The first and 6th tail feathers were not pointed although I thought they might be more rounded if it was an older bird. All the greater coverts seemed the same. You can see some brown in this image. 22 April 2015 at 12:42. New Species f...

Charnwood Ringing Group: April 2015

Sunday, 26 April 2015. It was nice to catch my first Grasshopper Warbler of the year , after a " dip" in 2014. One of my favourite birds. Lets hope they have a good year in 2015. Wednesday, 22 April 2015. New Species for Hicks Lodge! Thought this might be a new species, Swallow Tailed Warbler! Just a Chiff that was regrowing part of its tail. A returning Blackcap was good to catch and indicates that the habitat is attractive to this species. All the greater coverts seemed the same.

Charnwood Ringing Group: January 2015

http://charnwoodringers.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Monday, 19 January 2015. My first ringing session of 2015 at Thornton today resulted in 15 birds caught of 10 species. Top bird was this first winter male Blackcap. It had been feeding on Himalayan honeysuckle, which is an excellent shrub for attracting this species. Ringing recoveries have shown that many of our over wintering Blackcap come from central Europe and especially Southern Germany. I hope this bird is recaptured in the future so we can find out where it decides to breed.

Charnwood Ringing Group: February 2015

http://charnwoodringers.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 11 February 2015. The long awaited Snipe ringing session at Hicks Lodge was a success. We positioned two lines of nets, one of four and one of three 18m nets. We then walked the field after dark. First out of the net was this Woodcock, a ringing tick for Gemma. Next was a Jack Snipe, an extraction tick for Chris, but a ringing tick for Andy. Two Snipe were also caught, a ringing tick for Chris, completing the hat trick of ticks! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Ringing and birding links.

Thornton Ornithological Society: August 2015

http://thorntonbirders.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html

Local bird ringing news. Sunday, 9 August 2015. White letter Hairstreak, thanks Neil, Even Better! Thanks to Neil Hagley's eagle eyes my Purple HS is in fact a White Letter Hairstreak. He saw my photos and was able to put me right. I had presumed that it would be a Purple HS as I have seen them locally. Lesson learnt, look more closely and presume nothing! My excuse is that it was heavily worn, but you can see the row of orange crescents on the edge of the hind wing. Saturday, 1 August 2015. White letter...

Local bird ringing news. Friday, 20 February 2015. An early Chiffchaff is frequenting the outflow channel. It was seen on the 18th and 19th February, sometimes in the company of a small tit flock. A male Blackcap is also coming to the garden feeders. Water Rail have been seen near the top end feeder and also in the outflow channel. It seems to suggest that there is more than one bird. Saturday, 14 February 2015. Tern Raft in Transit! Steady as she goes. It floats, as if there was any doubt!

Thornton Ornithological Society: June 2015

http://thorntonbirders.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

Local bird ringing news. Thursday, 18 June 2015. A photo of the BNG which I last saw on the 14th June in the centre of the res. hanging out with a GCG! Its favoured area had been taken over by fishing boats. Mind you I still think it has rather long legs. And its bill seems too long for your average Redshank. And is the bill tip slightly curved down? At least two different Red Kite have been recent visitors. This one is missing some tail feathers. Friday, 12 June 2015. Heath Fritillary at last! Thornton Ornithological Society: Purple Hairstreak on Meadow.

http://thorntonbirders.blogspot.com/2015/08/purple-hairstreak-on-meadow.html

Local bird ringing news. Saturday, 1 August 2015. Purple Hairstreak on Meadow. I was carrying out a butterfly survey on the meadow behind our house, when I found this Purple Hairstreak. It was slightly damaged and feeding on Ragwort. Normally this species is rather difficult to observe, preferring the tops of Oak trees. I have recorded this species around the reservoir before, but it was nice to find one virtually in the back garden and at eye-level! 2 August 2015 at 06:47. Nice butterfly record mate!

Thornton Ornithological Society: Summer Plumage BNG.

http://thorntonbirders.blogspot.com/2015/06/summer-plumage-bng.html

Local bird ringing news. Tuesday, 9 June 2015. I found this summer plumage Black-necked Grebe at Thornton on Monday afternoon. It spent most of its time feeding. My photos do not do it justice. The cheek feathers were resplendent in the afternoon sunshine! A Red Kite flew east on the 8th and this Chimney Sweeper moth was enjoying the sunshine on the acid meadow. Thornton Ornithological Society: January 2015

http://thorntonbirders.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Local bird ringing news. Monday, 19 January 2015. It was a surprise to catch this male Blackcap today. Normally a summer visitor some now over winter in Britain. Evidence from ringing has demonstrated that many of these winter Blackcaps are birds that have migrated from central Europe and especially countries such as Germany. This is not an unusual survival strategy. Many species head west when the cold continental climate of central Europe takes hold. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile.

Local bird ringing news. Sunday, 26 April 2015. A Shelduck was near the dam this morning. My first Cuckoo of the year flew along the ridge above Stony Bank. There was a good count of 5 Common Sandpiper on the dam. Other migrants included a singing Lesser Whitethroat and a single Swift. Sunday, 19 April 2015. Osprey update and other migrants. John has requested any photos of colour ringed osprey. Please send them to him, no matter how poor, and mine were poor! Saturday, 18 April 2015. I looked in Collins ...
