Vertebrae Lodge as it entered its second year of operation. In the summer of 2003, a front deck was added, the roof overhang was extended and a support structure for the overhang was built. Paneling was added to the dining hall ceiling and gable end and the whole building took on a more finished appearance.

As the building neared 'lockup' with the roof on, a serious supply effort started. All of the finishing materials had to be brought to the site by road. Window openings will be later cut to size and notched to allow the log walls to settle around the window casings. The logs are very green and are full of moisture. Trees were felled and limbed in the bush and the logs were dragged to the site. The trees were cut before the sap rises from the roots, which results in less shrinkage as the wood cures.
