What is zumba, you might ask? Well, it’s a workout first created in 1986 by fitness instructor, Alberto “Beto”Perez. And Aqua Zumba in the pool for older populations to Zumba Toning which uses toning sticks—whatever that might be! Our class, taught by an upbeat and encouraging young woman named Tina, consists of a fairly wide range of ages. As for ability, you’re moving so fast trying to keep up with the instructor that you don’t notice how you or others are managing! Also LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem.

American and Ethnic Meals. Readers have undoubtedly noticed what f. Riends and family will tell you: we’re dedicated food lovers! May be available somewhere in Paris, cheese poses another problem. I don’t know about you, but gruyère. With Mexican food just does not appeal to me. After a few months of living abroad, you really start to miss some old favorites at meal time. Imagine our delight when we read a blog post by fellow American David Lebovitz. That good Mexican food is available in Paris! Place be...

Gumbo in New Orleans. Our previous knowledge of the French Quarter in New Orleans consisted of a few restaurants, Jackson Square, and the honky-tonk joints on Bourbon Street. So imagine our delight last week when we came across a chalkboard sign near St. Louis Cathedral announcing guided visits to "the other side" of the historic area given twice a day by the Louisiana State Museum. To govern slaves in the colony. The historic French Quarter was the original settlement site and is at times. The Epicurean...

This question naturally comes to mind when one visits a current exhibition at Manhattan’s Metropolitan Museum. There, the Costume Institute has devoted a large space on the main floor to Elsa Schiaparelli (1890-1973) and Miuccia Prada (1949-). The subtitle of the show. Are more conventionally beautiful. Sure, one finds, here or there, outrageous creations like the Shoe Hat. And the comical Lobster Dress. Schiaparelli designed in collaboration with Salvador Dali and worn by Wallis Simpson, but there are a...

From my point of view, the French believe in celebrating. Every month and sometimes more often, it seems, there is some kind of ritual that calls for making special foods and having fun. I suppose the cynical would say that it’s just an excuse for selling cakes and chocolates at the boulangeries-pâtisseries. I see it more as a philosophy that rejoices in the small things in life. In the five weeks that we’ve been here, there have already been several. Of these types of. The galette des rois. 8211;far fro...

Madame Boisvert: A Beautiful Day on the Riviera

http://madameboisvert.blogspot.com/2009/05/beautiful-day-on-riviera.html

Wednesday, May 20, 2009. A Beautiful Day on the Riviera. Last Saturday the "weather gods” were with us as we left Port-Fréjus heading east to see more of la Côte d’Azur. And making our way to Cannes. The drive along the cliff road, la Corniche de l’Esterel. We were well aware that the yearly Festival de Cannes 2009. Was in full swing, meaning traffic and people galore. So we grabbed the first underground parking lot we could find near la Croisette. The crowds were enormous, especially as we neared. I hav...

Friday, June 12, 2009. 171; Au revoir. The fun of walking up the main street in town which is turned into an outdoor shopping mall, hearing and speaking French, and especially talking to the nice fruit and vegetable man. Wearing un bonnet. Or the director of the tram system in Montpellier who discussed French politics with us in Paris? Too many memories to mention, really, with warm, friendly French people. Madame Boisvert: Roman Orange

http://madameboisvert.blogspot.com/2009/05/visit-to-orange.html

Saturday, May 23, 2009. Since we still had the car last Monday, we decided to go see another of the big towns of the Vaucluse: Orange. The area has undergone tremendous transformations and hardships over the centuries. Originally settled by the Gauls, it became a Roman colony around the year 35 BCE. The city went on to be attacked and partially destroyed by the Visigoths in the fifth century. Its population was decimated by la peste. There is an Arc de Triomphe. Only in Syria and Turkey could you also fi...

Madame Boisvert: February 2009

http://madameboisvert.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html

Friday, February 27, 2009. When we were at the tourist bureau in Carpentras about a month ago, the young woman working there gave us a flyer of tours and lectures in and around the city. So, yesterday, on a beautiful day that was about 30 degrees warmer than on our last trip (now up to about 55 degrees F.), we caught the 1:00 bus in to town. On tap for Thursday the 26th was a tour of the synagogue— la syna. Which, like many French churches, has elements of construction from several different centuries.

Madame Boisvert: January 2009

http://madameboisvert.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

Saturday, January 31, 2009. A trip to the big city. Before anyone jumps to conclusions, we did not take off for Paris, Marseille, Nice, or even Avignon. The word “big,” we discover more and more, is a completely relative term and in this case “the big city” in our part of the Vaucluse means Carpentras. Population 26,000. But, when you think about it, that’s ten times bigger than Bédoin and many times the population of nearby Saint-Pierre-de-Vassols which has a mere 467 people! For the forty-minute ride.

Madame Boisvert: A Day in Paris

http://madameboisvert.blogspot.com/2009/05/day-in-paris.html

Friday, May 29, 2009. A Day in Paris. Our first twenty-four hours are just about over and I couldn’t wait to report on what’s gone on so far. Last fall I’d read. An interesting book written by an Australian journalist who married a Frenchman and eventually moved to le premier arrondissement. In Paris. In Almost French. Sarah Turnbull lovingly describes la rue Montorgueil. The delicious-looking pastries and prepared foods at Stohrer. From there it was a short bus ride to la place de la République. Back to...

http://madameboisvert.blogspot.com/2009/06/visit-to-quai-branly.html

Wednesday, June 10, 2009. A Visit to Quai Branly. On our last full day in Paris we decided to hop a bus down to la rive gauche. 8220;the left bank”) to visit the relatively new Musée du quai Branly. Located in a modernistic building on the Seine hard by la Tour Eiffel. Its walls are decorated to simulate the outdoors and rocks in a cave. Is astounding because of the number of objects on display (over 3500! The museum’s property also includes a small gift shop and a lovely garden with many. I'm a college ...

An area that includes the towns of Avignon, Orange, Apt, and Cavaillon. We'll be near Carpentras at the foot of Mont Ventoux. Posted by Mme Boisvert. Madame Boisvert: An Afternoon at Père Lachaise

Sunday, June 7, 2009. An Afternoon at Père Lachaise. We’re not morbid individuals; really, we aren’t. Visiting a Parisian cemetery is like walking around in a beautiful park, only one where there are tombstones! The main inner-city graveyards in the French capital are lined with trees and flowers and have substantial collections of art works by famous sculptors. When we took a tour of le cimetière de l’Est. Better known as Père Lachaise. This cemetery in Paris’s 20e arrondissement. Before the tour starte...
