Chelemhá has been declared as Private Protected Area in 2002 (Resolución 127/2002 CONAP - Consejo Nacional de Áreas Protegidas), and is managed by the conservationist organization UPROBON (Unión para Proteger el Bosque Nuboso), based in Cobán and Chelemhá. UPROBON's goal is to protect the remaining primary cloud forest on the long term through sustainable land use for tourism, energy production, agriculture, and research.
