Saturday, February 11, 2012. One year ago today, I cooked myself a bowl of oatmeal and decided to write about it. Having just reread that last sentence, I must say I sound exceptionally boring. Thank you for choosing to read these words despite that unpromising beginning. What's next in the year to come? We'll have to wait and find out together. Except, of course, for more oatmeal, because right now it's lunch time and apparently I'm still pretty boring. Thanks for taking us along on the ride.

There on standby for any necessary late-night perusal. In other words, I have a really active social life. This week I've worked my way through a few other books as well, what with having 12 hours of train rides. But back to the books - I can't think about chicken soup without thinking of Maurice Sendak's classic. 5 stalks of celery.

Friday, September 23, 2011. Just in case you were wondering what to send me. When I lived in Paris in 2008, my host family had two exchange students: me, and another girl from my exchange program. While I was there, my mom sent me a guidebook. To the best pâtisseries. Or pastry shops, in Paris. My roommate's mom sent her miniature boxes of American cereals. Bible in hand. Good thing I did; otherwise, I doubt I ever would have found Le Loir dans la Théière. For the tarte aux oignons rouges et tomates.

Saturday, July 30, 2011. I boated under low, canal-spanning bridges. I dipped my toes in the Mediterranean. I compared tomatoes at open-air markets. I visited cathedrals and soaked in a gargoyle's-eye view. I hiked Alpine peaks while cowbells jingled in the distance. I rode téléphériques through the clouds. I trod over cobbled streets through half-timbered neighborhoods. I considered breaking US customs laws. I watched naked children play in the world's largest puddle. I nibbled pastries by riversides.
