Green living: Winter vegetables
http://chervil-earth.blogspot.com/2009/07/winter-vegetables.html
Musings from Down Under. Wednesday, July 15, 2009. Image above: North-Eastern corner of our garden. Winter is truly upon us. We have had some freezing nights. And more cold weather may be on the way. I really like the early mornings, when the fog is still settled on the mountains, and everything is covered in white frost. People in Canberra often wonder whether you can grow anything edible in winter, and many won't even try. There are red and green cabbages that are coming along nicely, and my "living sa...
Green living: We need to take climate change seriously NOW
http://chervil-earth.blogspot.com/2013/06/we-need-to-take-climate-change.html
Musings from Down Under. Monday, June 17, 2013. We need to take climate change seriously NOW. Last month we passed an unthinkable benchmark - 400ppm of CO2 in the atmosphere. Yet, this terrifying piece of news made hardly any waves among the mainstream news media. Why not? We should all be completely horrified. We should be out there working hard to change things before it is too late. But that is not enough. The latest Australian Climate Commission's Report " The Critical Decade: Extreme Weather. The ca...
Green living: The story of stuff
http://chervil-earth.blogspot.com/2009/09/story-of-stuff.html
Musings from Down Under. Wednesday, September 16, 2009. The story of stuff. Amongst the news of the success of various stimulus payments and the rebirth of our national economies from the rubble of the financial crisis comes a report by a team of international authors led by Nobel-price winning economist Joseph Stiglitz and commissioned by French President Nicolas Sarkozy that questions the very basis of how we measure our wealth. A link to the full report can be found at the Globalpost. Any green-minded...
Green living: St Martin's Bread (Weckmänner)
http://chervil-earth.blogspot.com/2008/06/st-martins-bread-weckmnner.html
Musings from Down Under. Saturday, July 12, 2008. St Martin's Bread (Weckmänner). You can tell it's winter in our part of the woods. It is cold outside and baking bread warms the kitchen and fills the house with a lovely scent. They are, in fact, delicious any time of the year. Here is the recipe:. 500g plain flour (plus extra flour for kneading). 7g yeast (or 2 teaspoons of dried yeast). Approximately 250ml warm milk. 1 cup of plain yoghurt. 6 tablespoons of vegetable oil. 2 teaspoons of salt. Add a tab...
Green living: A new beginning
http://chervil-earth.blogspot.com/2013/06/a-new-beginning.html
Musings from Down Under. Wednesday, June 12, 2013. So what has changed? To start with, my youngest has outgrown his toddler years and is now in his second year of homeschooling. The boys are becoming more independent and are able to help around the house. I feel that I have finally emerged from the phase of intensive early parenting and can now again focus on something beyond the immediate needs of our family. The only bread recipe you need. Trying to get around town with three little children in tow has...

February 26, 2008 at 4:18 am. About 18 months ago, we took a bit of a driving holiday to Tasmania, and went scoffing in the land down under the Land Down Under. On one of our sojourns we found Grandvewe Sheep Cheesery. Next time you’re passing, do yourself a cheesy favour and drop in to them. We spent a week driving about sampling the best food we could get our hands on and this was one of the highlights. (Travel tip: Buy small esky for car.). Entry filed under: cheese. March 26, 2008 at 12:56 am. If you believe that alchemy is the transmutation of base metals into gold, I believe that there’s three foods that fit that bill in the ingestion world honey, bread and cheese. This trio of magic never ceases to thrill me when I take the time out to think about what they really are. And how the same ingredients can taste so different depending on their location, surrounding plant life, humidity just about ever natural phenomenon can have an affect on their taste and texture.

The Pescavore’s Dilemma Omega 3 anyone. February 21, 2008 at 1:43 am. It’s unfortunate and indeed ironic, that only farmed fish can be considered organic, as fish havested from our seas can’t be ‘interrogated for its pedigree’ as to cleanliness of water, diet, ingested toxins, whether the fish has been caught sustainably or not. Australia’s first organic fish farm, Organic Fish (Australia) Pty Ltd, or. Soulfish silver perch comes from the subtropical climes of near Grafton, NSW. Entry filed under: fish.

February 21, 2008 at 12:48 am. The US Food and Drug Administration has now approved the consumption of food from cloned animals and their offspring. That’s the bad news. (Australia does produce cloned cattle, but sensibly, we don’t eat it). And what’s more those cloned animals may well be eating Genetically Modified feed. Did we learn nothing from CJD? It does my proverbial head it. And of course, NASA is investigating grow ‘meat’ in a petrie dish. It doesn’t get much more local tha...You are commenting ...

Mothers Sleep Easy Blue Smarties have returned. I don’t know about you, but I just haven’t had a decent night’s sleep since blue Smarties were withdrawn from the market over concerns that their splendidly artificial colour had some link to hyperactivity in kiddies. Nestle, ever the good corporate citizen, has not yet been able to confirm whether the blue Smarties will maintain any of Spirulina’s health benefits. February 13, 2008 at 10:59 pm. If people want some guidance, I say, just look at what people really do. Don't listen to them that much. And choose your friends from people who you like what they do - even though you mightn't like what they say. -Bill Mollison. Sunday, March 15, 2009. Permaculture in the fast lane. In the past three months, every time I have tried to sit in front of this machine and tell a tale I find myself pulled away by other things. In order to catch up I will be light on words, and heavy on pictures. Permaculture ...

Friday, May 2, 2014. When you were given a chance to shine, dont ask for permission to success. . Asking for permission opens the door for denial. I began to understand clearly that I could never make assumptions about how people perceive me. . You can never please anyone but yourself. Who cares if you have 3 plates of nasi lemak or 10 packs of peanuts? Who cares if you ran 21km or swam 5km today? Go with the flow. Nothing was guaranteed until I had an offer in hand. Its time to grow up, Life is awesome!

Musings from Down Under. Thursday, April 21, 2016. Whole grains are packed in sealed bags so I can even make my own flour from scratch. But every now and again, the recipe starts to a bit stale and the bread making routine becomes boring, a chore rather than a joy. At that point it is good to have another look at some bread baking books. Do you have any bread books you have used that you can recommend? There are so many recipe books available that it is actually quite difficult to choose. I was particula...
