cheviots: September 2014

http://cheviots.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

One more knitting blog. Tuesday, September 30, 2014. From Ornans we rode on to Salins-les -Bains, an ancient town set between these two prominent cliffs. M. Vauban has been at work here too, as once the product of the town was a matter of national significance. We learned a lot about the processes involved in salt extraction, and also about the "Gabelle", or salt tax which was a major cause of discontent in Pre-Revolutionary France. All day a constant stream of traffic roars through Salins-les Bains....

cheviots: Far From the Madding Crowd

http://cheviots.blogspot.com/2015/05/far-from-madding-crowd.html

One more knitting blog. Wednesday, May 13, 2015. Far From the Madding Crowd. This week, to the new release at my local Cineworld. How could anything equal that 70s version with Julie Christie dressed in Laura Ashley, Terence Stamp and his blue eyes, Peter Finch looking suitably deranged as Boldwood, and Alan Bates as the dependable Farmer Oak? I saw Terence Stamp recently in one of those films made for the older generation - did they have those in the 70s? And how time has wrought its revenges. You may b...

cheviots: Crosscanonby

http://cheviots.blogspot.com/2015/04/crosscanonby.html

One more knitting blog. Wednesday, April 15, 2015. On the Tuesday after Easter we took out our bicycles and rode up the coast to the little hamlet of Crosscanonby. This overlooks the Solway coast just above the Eighteenth century salt-pans and the Roman Mile fortlet. It also has a really interesting parish church, for those who find such things of interest. Outside the porch is a small collection of tombs, including a Viking hog-back tomb from about 1100. Hello Shandy- I found your blog through Jeans Kni...

cheviots: Baby Knits

http://cheviots.blogspot.com/2015/04/baby-knits.html

One more knitting blog. Wednesday, April 29, 2015. In a reaction to knitting from complex Fair isle charts, I decided to do some charity knitting. I found a charity on Ravelry which knits items for the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Each month thirty plus infants are born there and they need warm clothing. I've recently had a letter back from the coordinator in South Dakota, so I know that my items have arrived and are already in use. An ideal project. What a great thing to do!

cheviots: Two walks

http://cheviots.blogspot.com/2015/04/two-walks.html

One more knitting blog. Friday, April 17, 2015. Why, thank you, Marilyn (Comments, yesterday). I'm glad that you are enjoying what I post. So- first we went up Fellbarrow, a low-lying fell to the west of Loweswater. Last year we made the mistake of thinking that Low Fell, its neighbour, might be aptly named and found ourselves not only on a very steep ascent, but also without a sensible path down. Walking over rough fell and heather where there is no path is very hard on the knees and ankles. Our walk to...

Wool-n-Ski: May 2016

http://wool-n-ski.blogspot.com/2016_05_01_archive.html

Knitting, skiing, hiking, biking, dogs, tundra, mountains, cooking. Saturday, May 14, 2016. The Light at The End of The Tunnel, Holiday, Vacation . . . Bliss, Freedom, Yahoooooo! It is that time of the year all teachers look forward to and all kids look forward to. This little collection of photos is from March '16. Our ski season was shorter this year and I only was able to get in 102 days of skiing. I always have a goal of 100 days on skis but would love to hit 125 in a perfect winter. Started a pair of.

Wool-n-Ski: October 2016

http://wool-n-ski.blogspot.com/2016_10_01_archive.html

Knitting, skiing, hiking, biking, dogs, tundra, mountains, cooking. Saturday, October 22, 2016. October's full moon setting over Norton Sound about 7:00 am last weekend. Our daylight is slipping away and darkness is returning to the north. I actually really enjoy the approach of our long nights. I find the whole cycle of the seasons in the northern latitudes very comforting. Looking down into the village of Unalakleet with ice taking over the river and the slough. Norton Sound in the distance with se...

Wool-n-Ski: Knit Girls

http://wool-n-ski.blogspot.com/2016/12/knit-girls.html

Knitting, skiing, hiking, biking, dogs, tundra, mountains, cooking. Thursday, December 29, 2016. I have written about the Knit Girls before and here is an update of them in action. My niece has three girls and they have discovered that 100% wool is the best thing for staying warm. They were all a bit picky about rustic real wool but I won them over. When you live in a damp place and off the grid one learns quickly to be warm one wears wool! Hats are knitted with yarn from Polka Dot Sheep. I live with my ...

Wool-n-Ski: January 2016

http://wool-n-ski.blogspot.com/2016_01_01_archive.html

Knitting, skiing, hiking, biking, dogs, tundra, mountains, cooking. Sunday, January 31, 2016. For all of those who stop by for a visit and a read you all know I enjoy winter A LOT. I love skiing, snow falling down, cold, crisp air, a rich blue sky, the squeak of snow under my feet as I walk to work or run errands . . . and this winter has been an abominable disappointment! WIND: Lets talk about wind! Yesterday during ski practice at 34ºF the kids were all way to HOT! Ok so enough belly aching! This angle...

http://wool-n-ski.blogspot.com/2015_12_01_archive.html

Knitting, skiing, hiking, biking, dogs, tundra, mountains, cooking. Wednesday, December 23, 2015. One Year Later: Wheat Free. Back on December 21, 2014, I decided after reading the book Wheat Belly that I would go wheat free for 6 mos. I thought "What the heck, I could give this a try and of course I would have remarkable results like all the people in the book, blog, and facebook." Off I went, No more wheat! What have I learned:. A few of my favorite sites:. Https:/ www.wheatfreemarket.com/. This certai...

Knitting, skiing, hiking, biking, dogs, tundra, mountains, cooking. Sunday, March 20, 2016. Unspun Icelandic Wool: Can you say "Lets FROG more than we KNIT! If you go to this post you can read about this fiber/wool called Unspun Icelandic Wool. Here you can see the start to this journey of my sweater. I bravely casted-on to start a sleeve and right away I found this unspun wool to be very nice to handle and pretty tough stuff. Here is the sleeve which had a color issue. There is white in the center o...

Wool-n-Ski: Living The Dream . . . Reality Check!

http://wool-n-ski.blogspot.com/2017/01/living-dream-reality-check.html

Knitting, skiing, hiking, biking, dogs, tundra, mountains, cooking. Thursday, January 5, 2017. Living The Dream . . . Reality Check! These photos remind me of why I do what I do in life. I live in a rural mostly Inupiaq village on the shores of Norton Sound which is just off the Bering Sea. Life has it challenges out here and it has great rewards! Work can be hard and frustrating! Then I get outside and the world opens up and the faces smile and we all have a blast! Sun set was a burst of color. His dad ...

Wool-n-Ski: June 2016

http://wool-n-ski.blogspot.com/2016_06_01_archive.html

Knitting, skiing, hiking, biking, dogs, tundra, mountains, cooking. Monday, June 20, 2016. The Coming Home Hat. Was a fantastic knit! Easy to follow, knitted with rich colored super wash PDS yarn. That is hand dyed all help to create a great finished project. I really enjoy a great fitting hat as I seem to spend most of any given year in a hat. I don't live in the warmest places and prefer higher elevations or higher latitudes thus the reason for hats. Front porch knitting . . . BLISS! My Father In Law w...

Knitting, skiing, hiking, biking, dogs, tundra, mountains, cooking. Saturday, April 30, 2016. Morning is my time of day and I love to be left alone to enjoy my time! Some folks are night people something I can not understand at all, just like night people don't get morning people. I know it is a genetic link somehow as my father was the before the crack of dawn guy. Nothing is better than that first cup of coffee early in the morning- -just wonderful! Now that the roads are clear Sadie and sometimes Tall...
