Language Differences | China First Hand
https://chinafirsthand.wordpress.com/2006/02/07/language-differences
8212; china1sthand @ 11:14 pm. Where I am living I need to learn at least a little language. Most languages that English speakers learn are pretty similar to English. Well okay, there are some similarities. It’s pretty easy to adjust to Chinese sentences if you know English because the structure is much the same. It’s like baby talk:. I go bed . Tenses are shown by context: Yesterday I go bed . But reading or writing, or speaking or listening to this language that’s a whole other thing. In Pinyin ‘zhi’ s...

Food, Glorious Food! | China First Hand

Food, Glorious Food! 8212; china1sthand @ 12:13 am. I went to karaoke yesterday, and included in the price was a free buffet. It was your usual Chinese food, but obviously I wanted to try everything! On the walk home my whole body swelled up. My fingers got so fat I couldn’t even see the lines on my hands! I didn’t feel sick, just really uncomfortable. That night I couldn’t sleep a wink. After that I was fine, except I wasn’t hungry for days! What was that all about? Chinese do eat food that we don’t.

For You…I Insist. 8212; china1sthand @ 3:07 pm. When I first came here, I brought gifts from England for my hosts. They didn’t seem grateful. Today my surrogate mother visited me and signalled that a huge, beautiful, expensive-looking box of loveliness was for me! There’s just different ways of doing things here. Whenever I asked Chinese people for advice on appropriate gifts, they struggled. Gifts are not a regular part of Chinese life. And yet Chinese people are so happy proving you don’t need presents!

War and Beauty | China First Hand
https://chinafirsthand.wordpress.com/2006/02/28/war-and-beauty
8212; china1sthand @ 2:03 pm. I saw my first episode of a fantastic drama! The literal translation is War and Beauty, and it is based around the historic world of the Chinese court. Everyone is fighting for power – but it is the subtle and ingenious ways they do this that is so intriguing. Within the setting, these stories are absolutely believable. The main action in War and Beauty centres on the concubines. The life of a concubine was a game of prostitution and chance. In this drama, the girls came up ...
