What Marziman's been reading. Saturday, April 24, 2004. The Dice Man - Luke Rhinehart. Although I certainly thought this dragged at the end, I would list it as one of those books you are ashamed to find terribly, terribly funny. A bit like that novel I read by Colin Bateman. Whose novels I was not surprised to see advertised at the back of this book. I'll now go on to another book bought for me by Catherine and Leslie. But a somewhat calmer one. Ideas that have come floating in, as Joan Aiken said, like butterflies. Tuesday, December 30, 2003. During my run I had an idea for a story, sort of along tthe lines of a wise child having to work around a foolish parent, although hoping to develop it as I know this is becoming a hackneyed theme, and some of this story covers another idea I have had for a good two decades about a woman arriving in London. What Marziman's been reading. Sunday, January 25, 2004. Ripley's Game - Patricia Highsmith. Like Ripley Under Ground, the book is slightly over-long. I sometimes get the impression that with both these books Patricia Highsmith is thinking, "Right, established everything, plot reaching a conclusion, just need to string it along a bit more to make the book a decent size.". Thank God we had less of the unconvincing Heloise. Posted by Marziman : 1/25/2004 10:58:00 PM. Friday, January 16, 2004. Still, I do lo...

What Marziman's been reading. Friday, February 20, 2004. The Gate - Francois Bizot. Ideally I'd like to say this harrowing and astonishing book is one of the most thought-provoking I have ever read. It's all about the author's experiences as a prisoner of the Khmer Rouge in 1971, and later as the gatekeeper at the French Embassy in Phnom Penh immediately after the city and Cambodia as a whole fell to the Communists in April 1975. Lady married to a Cambodian who was being forced out of the embassy, who ch...

What Marziman's been reading. Friday, March 19, 2004. What's Bred in the Bone - Robertson Davies. Robertson Davies is always a pleasure to read, and his musings on art, love and what constitutes a fake in this book had me fascinated. I liked his clever use of sudden repetitions in the plot and conversation that had you scurrying back through the pages to find the first time such ideas occured. Still, it hasn't put me off trying more Davies, and I now want to complete the trilogy by reading.

Ideas that have come floating in, as Joan Aiken said, like butterflies. Tuesday, April 13, 2004. The son of a family of four goes missing, causing heartbreak for his parents and sister, who launch an unsuccessful nationwide campaign to track him down. Many years later, long after the parents have died, the sister, now an unpopular single woman in her late 40s who people only vaguely remember when she mentions her surname, gets onto a train and finds her brother sitting opposite her.

Ideas that have come floating in, as Joan Aiken said, like butterflies. Friday, January 30, 2004. Had more thoughts about this. Dead' wife could turn up and reveal herself to a small company (at which the girlfriend is only slightly present). Then she could turn up later in the girlfriend's home and claim that she is only an impostor - but isn't she a good one? He gets released, but they argue, and eventually split up. But by this time she has given her money away. Posted by Marziman : 5:27 AM. Rachel Sm...

What Marziman's been reading. Thursday, May 13, 2004. In Siberia - Colin Thubron. One of the most beautifually written books I have read in a long time. It may have ended in a rather strange high gear, but that set you thinking even more about all those 'useful idiots', as Stalin called them, who liked to think that the Soviet Gulag was nothing really. Think I will now go on to a book about cars. Posted by Marziman : 5/13/2004 11:31:00 PM.
