The historic Chowilla Shearers Quarters offer a unique experience. This accommodation is situated right on the banks of the mighty River Murray, where the paddle steamers once used to ply. The history, tranquility, freshness, sounds of the bush and beauty of the area all combine to provide an atmosphere that is truly unique. In 1864 Richard Holland obtained the Bookmark Station lease for his stepsons: John, William and Robert Robertson. Bookmark extended from Spring Car Gully near Berri and extended through to the NSW border. This was before any white settlement in the area and it was from that the Bookmark lease that the South Australian Government granted the Chaffey Brothers 30,000 acres to begin Renmark, the first irrigation colony in Australia in 1887. Chowilla is located in South Australia's Riverland, situated some 300km from the capital Adelaide. The nearest main township to Chowilla is Renmark. Renmark has its own airstrip but is not serviced by a regular passenger service, however charter planes can be booked through varying companies. The nearest serviced airport to Chowilla is Mildura. Passenger collection can be arranged for those choosing to stay at Chowilla. Cost of collection can be negotiated at the time of booking.
