Hanoi Scratchpad: July 2010
http://hanoiscratchpad.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html
Saturday, July 31, 2010. Da Nang By Day. Seen from the air, Da Nang (Đà Nẵng) is built on a stretch of coastline from which two small bites have been taken out: one by Da Nang Bay ( Vịnh Đà Nẵng. To the north, and the other to the east by the South China Sea. The resulting land form is shaped like an apple core, with the Sơn Trà Penninsula at the top and the city itself at the foot. The Han River ( Sông Hàn. The town itself is fairly ordinary at first blush. Definitely a small city and not a large to...
Hanoi Scratchpad: Evening in Da Nang
http://hanoiscratchpad.blogspot.com/2010/07/evening-in-da-nang.html
Thursday, July 29, 2010. Evening in Da Nang. With fewer than one million people, Da Nang ( Đà Nẵng. Is Vietnam's fourth largest city, after Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Hai Phong ( Hải Phòng. Da Nang is one of the cities I visited on my inaugural trip to Vietnam, in 1991 (see The Road to Hanoi. And Hue ( Huế. It is the first time since 1991 that I have come down into the heart of this country, and I am anxious to see not only how it has changed, but what dormant memories may be jostled by returning to th...
Hanoi Scratchpad: August 2010
http://hanoiscratchpad.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html
Wednesday, August 11, 2010. Huế is a relatively small city, but its historical and cultural importance gives it a justifiably big attitude. These divisions, and Huế's significance, have their roots in Vietnam's often tumultuous history. Throughout the 16th and much of the 17th century, Vietnam was engulfed in a power struggle between the Trinh Lords ( Chúa Trịnh. In the north and the Nguyen Lords ( Chúa Nguyễn. In the south. Their dividing line was the Gianh River ( Sông Gianh. Huế's proximity to the 17t...
Hanoi Scratchpad: March 2010

Thursday, March 25, 2010. Up till now, I have steadfastly refused to discuss phở. The national dish of Vietnam. It's been a wise decision. Like New Yorkers with their pizza, Hanoians take their phở. You'd best remain silent. After 11 months, however, I have begun to understand something about Vietnam's national dish. The validation of this came last week, when Hương at last showed me how to make phở. Not just any phở. And make no mistake about it: phở. From one that is euphoric. Preparations are alike...
Hanoi Scratchpad: Hoi An
http://hanoiscratchpad.blogspot.com/2010/08/hoi.html
Wednesday, August 4, 2010. Hoi An ( Hội An. In 1991 was one of the highlights of my Vietnamese sojourn. In the intervening years, it has become a must-see destination on the backpacker trail. I had heard of its development into a tourist locale, and was curious to see how much of its historical charm had been lost. In narrow wooden boats and I'll be damned if it isn't picturesque. Just remember that basing your opinion of Vietnam on places like Hoi An leaves you with a warped picture of what the country ...
VA to VN: Outlook Interview
http://vatovn.blogspot.com/2008/05/outlook-interview.html
A blog about travels from Virginia to Vietnam, beginning in 2006. Monday, May 26, 2008. I've been reading these "On The Stool" features in Timeout magazine, a 40 page or so weekly magazine insert in the local English language weekly business paper, Vietnam Investment Review. Age: older than 50% of the local populace, at least. What brought you to Vietnam? What is keeping you here? Where do you go to escape? Any of the local golf courses. Which are better than my 'home' courses. What don't you miss? She, ...
VA to VN: Business Pods on United Airlines
http://vatovn.blogspot.com/2008/11/business-pods-on-united-airlines.html
A blog about travels from Virginia to Vietnam, beginning in 2006. Wednesday, November 12, 2008. Business Pods on United Airlines. On a recent flight, I was bumped into business class on United. It was one of the planes that had been upgraded to the "pods" style seating, which was pretty cool. Non-pod seating business class on United's international flights are crappier than Vietnam Airlines' business class. The other pod people. I think it would suck to fly backwards, but those folks didn't mind.

RaNTs and rUMInATiOnS of AMadBROwnWOmaN. Saturday, April 21, 2007. Stop smoking. Quit, re-quit, acquit, doesn't matter. Just stop. Remember Maya Angelou. What if I'm really special. (I'm lying! This is pop American psychology.). Stop taking too much pain relievers when I have migraine. No matter what I think, I'm not more charming when high. Stop watching too much MTV. All those images of women only make me feel more insecure. And they're not showing Arctic Monkeys in the next 20 hours. Days Mmm, well, b...

Federal Agency and Grand Jury Investigations. Motions for Appropriate Relief (MARs). Sunday, March 11, 2012. Two articles that keep me thinking. I keep thinking about and re-reading Adam Gopnik's article, The Caging of America. I know you are busy, but I hope you will read it, and think about what mass-incarceration is doing to America. This morning's Op-Ed in the New York Times by Michelle Alexander. Suggesting the equivalent of a Strike by defendants against taking pleas has me thinking even more.
Chris Fialko | Defending the Constitution
A Blog by Chris Fialko. We Better Get Used to These Seven NC Supreme Court Justices. September 8, 2015. The North Carolina legislature recently passed a new law. Governing the election of our Supreme Court justices that puzzles the hell out of me. I think it effectively gives the current seven justices life tenure, or something close to it. I’m hoping someone can explain to me the reason behind this change. I have tried several times (once with the aid of beer. And anyone else who wants to run. I found a...
