Christopher Hynes grew up in Washington, D.C., the youngest of ten children in a creative, political family. In the family culture there was a tradition of individual expression, a strong work ethic, and the idea that there is a duty to contribute to society, to give something back.

These paintings are part of an ongoing series of some of my favorite players. Most of the subjects are recognizable for their contributions to modern American music. I portray the musicians against backgrounds that express my feelings about the musicians improvisational solos and that also attempt to capture the essence of jazz itself.

My works, in the tradition of the Washington Color School, use color not just as element, but as primary theme. These wall studies straddle the fence between painting and sculpture. Objects of glass, mirror, or metal mounted on boards are embedded in a mixture of texture and layers of brushed, sprayed, or poured paint.

ChrisTims (the Hynes Bros.). We go for the push/pull complexity, movement. The eye is activated it s drawn into the painting and back out, out and in. If that happens, that s when it works. That s when we re happy.

My assemblages are a natural outgrowth of the altars of junk I used to build everywhere. All my life I ve collected what I like to call lost objects. In the mid-80s when I quit playing music professionally, I started making my altars more structured and contained by putting objects in boxes. Over the years my boxes have become smaller. I use fewer objects, but I make each one count more. The construction is a form of storytelling, and I love to tell my stories.
