Readings in conflict-free replicated data types

http://christophermeiklejohn.com/crdt/2014/07/22/readings-in-crdts.html

Readings in conflict-free replicated data types. This is a work in progress post outlining research topics related to conflict-free replicated data types, or CRDTs. Yesterday, Basho announced the release of Riak 2.0.0 RC1. Which contains a comprehensive set of data types that can be used for building more robust distributed applications. For an overview of how to use these data types in Riak to avoid custom, and error prone, merge functions, see the Basho documentation site. Here’s a great overview.

Programming Models, Part 1: Try Derflow!

http://christophermeiklejohn.com/derflow/erlang/2014/09/28/try-derflow.html

Programming Models, Part 1: Try Derflow! Updated January 9th, 2015: Derflow has since been renamed to Lasp, which is open source on GitHub. For more information surrounding the name change, see this post. One of the main goals of the SyncFree. Project is to build a programming model for working with eventual consistency and conflict-free replicated data types. We’ve been well on our way to that goal, influenced heavily by Peter Van Roy’s work on dataflow programming. Work at Indiana University. And prese...

Programming Models, Part 4: One Week in Louvain-la-Neuve

http://christophermeiklejohn.com/erlang/lasp/2014/12/21/lasp.html

Programming Models, Part 4: One Week in Louvain-la-Neuve. As we discussed in our first post. Is the now former name of our distributed deterministic programming model that is the basis of our research into providing a more expressive way of working with CRDTs and eventual consistency. I’ve just returned from a one week vacation in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, where I spent the week working with Peter Van Roy. At Université catholique de Louvain. On what was formally referred to as Derflow. Adrian Colyer hi...

Readings in distributed systems

http://christophermeiklejohn.com/distributed/systems/2013/07/12/readings-in-distributed-systems.html

Readings in distributed systems. This post is a work in progress. Inspired by a recent purchase of the Red Book. Which provides a curated list of important papers around database systems, I’ve decided to begin assembling a list of important papers in distributed systems. Similar to the Red Book, I’ve broken each group of papers out into a series of categories, each highlighting a progression of related ideas over time focused in a specific area of research within the field. Diego Ongaro, John Ousterhout.

ActiveSupport Considered Harmful | Hayes Davis

http://hayesdavis.net/2010/07/26/activesupport-considered-harmful

This an open letter to my fellow ruby gem authors and maintainers. It’s been a while. You’re doing awesome stuff; all this great code out there making Ruby do all sorts of nifty things. It’s a big reason – maybe the reason – why being a Rubyist is so great. But yeah, there’s just one thing that’s been bugging me… we need to talk about ActiveSupport. ActiveSupport is great, don’t get me wrong. I love. Class Object def your great method puts "HEY I'M CHANGING OBJECT" end end. Or a few of these other modern...

Thoughts and projects from a site reliability engineer. Give It a Rest. Yesterday I walked out to my yard to find that all of my zucchini (courgette) plants are dying. It was cold enough the night before to kill them all at once and there really isn’t any saving them. It’s a new year and you likely just had some time off that wasn’t very restful. If you’re like me, you were probably busy traveling, shopping, worrying about money, or the holidays may even open up some new wounds for you. Don’t acc...A ter...

Thoughts and projects from a site reliability engineer. Kaizen is Japenese for good change or improvement and is frequently used within the context of lean manufacturing. Today though, I’m going to talk about a few things I want to improve for myself, both personally and professionally. Become proficient in Go. I find Go very appealing as a language, specifically for systems-level uses. Become proficient in Ruby. Alot of the software I’m responsible for maintaining at Heroku is written in Ruby. They feel...

Smartphone Philanderer. Coffee Drinker. Parent to the most awesome kid. November 14, 2013. Google’s Penguin algorithm targets websites with low-quality, spammy links that are inbound. In theory, the algorithm makes sense, punishing those who have engaged in attempting to boost rank using crappy links. I’m not referring to low-quality links, but pure spam, like this page on Blogspot. The practice of building spammy backlinks went well beyond Simply Sellular.
