8220;Christ before Pilate” by Mihaly Mukacsy (1840-1900) Public Domain. On the morning of His arrest, Jesus was brought to trial before both the Jewish religious and Roman authorities. Jesus was accused of the crime of blasphemy. According to Jewish law, this crime carried with it the death penalty. Blasphemy was the crime of defiling God or of claiming to be equal with God. Jesus was then turned over to the Roman governor named Pilate who sentenced Jesus to death by crucifixion. March 11, 2014.
