The history of cables in Weston-super-Mare. Cables to Weston were laid in 1885, 1901, 1910 and 1923[ map. The first and last agree well with major transatlantic cable laying projects by the company but the other two appear to represent network expansion rather than being directly linked to other Atlantic cables being laid to Waterville. The cable station at Waterville was clearly an impressive self-contained community. The buildings that remain are in good repair and many vestiges of corporate styling remain. It is well worth a visit and I hope some, at least, of the remaining vestiges of the Commercial Cable Company. Developed early on (before 1900) this technique allowed cables to earn their keep twice by being used simultaneously in each direction. An early recording instrument for automatically turning the received signal into a paper and ink copy. The precursor to 1970s computer I/O technology, this was initially used as a way to prepare messages and feed them onto the line automatically. Introduced in 1924. Compensated for cable capacitance and allowed 10x speed increase over the connection. SN1 Y and Z (2 core).
