This section of the route takes you over the hills of South Wales, above the mining valleys with their terraced houses, along the coast and through the rolling countryside of Carmarthenshire. Along ancient trackways through the woods. Follow the medieval pilgrimage route to Penrhys over the hills of South Wales, above the mining valleys . From Penrhys follow the prehistoric track over the hills to Llangynwyd then down to Margam Park. The coast path takes you above the M4 to join the Neath Canal.

We started in 1998 trying to work out a way that we could walk round Wales, linking all the Welsh Cistercian abbeys, medieval and modern. Neath Abbey Iron Works. Early iron works established by the Quakers. Myrddin’s Quoit (Dolaumeinion). An old village with nine wells. The 'Mountain of Five Peaks', Mid-Wales's highest mountain. Ruined chapel in the woods. Margam: abbey, village and Margam Stones Museum. The abbey is not the only thing of interest in this village! Llangynwyd, a medieval pilgrimage shrine. Massively defended concentric castle, started by Gilbert de Clare in 1268. Penrhys: one of the thin places.

Walk over the rolling Carmarthenshire hills, through the evocative Brechfa Forest and up the old Roman road to the coast of north Wales. You can visit the abbeys at Whitland, Strata Florida and Cymmer, the Roman fort at Tomen-y-mur (location of the Mabinogion story of Lleu Llaw Gyffes) and Dolwyddelan Castle, traditional birthplace of the great Welsh ruler Llywelyn ab Iorwerth.
