Nectar & Honey 101 | Bees in the City

https://citybees.wordpress.com/2009/06/19/nectar-honey-101

Bees in the City. Adventures in urban beekeeping. Nectar and Honey 101. Making Nectar into Honey. Pretty much everyone knows that bees collect nectar from flowers to make honey. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. I’m not going to talk too much about what nectar. Here For my younger readers (Hello to the Mighty Midway 4-Hers! And anyone else who wants to learn more, the Wikipedia article. One of my bees harvesting nectar. Has a nice one. My next post will have more photos, I promise! You are commenti...

I made several mistakes here, and I’ll let you know what they were. I chose a bad time of day. The best time to work with a hive is mid-afternoon, when a lot of them will be gone getting nectar and pollen. Waiting until evening isn’t the best idea. I did buy her a cup of coffee afterward, and she seems to have totally forgiven me and my bees for the sting. She&#821...

Tools and Toys | Bees in the City

Bees in the City. Adventures in urban beekeeping. In the last few posts, I’ve mentioned a few of the tools I use when I’m working with my hive, but here’s a quick introduction to the supplies I carry around in my bee bucket. I think that only two of them are really important for most beekeepers, and the rest are fun and useful toys that are more of a choice than a necessity. The other important tool that most beekeepers use is a smoker. My smoker, with the inner grate pulled out. This is a bee brush.

First Inspections | Bees in the City

https://citybees.wordpress.com/2009/06/05/first-inspections

Bees in the City. Adventures in urban beekeeping. Here’s a quick look at what this beekeeper does during an inspection in the spring. Early in the year, and especially with a new package of bees, I need to make sure the bees have fresh sugar syrup, which provides a food source right inside the hive. Adding a syrup pail. This is a pollen patty-its icky and sticky, but the bees love it! Heres a partly-eaten pollen patty. On 5 June 2009 at 4:47 am Leave a Comment. To TrackBack this entry is:. You are commen...

Hasty Brook: Road Trip!

http://hastybrook.blogspot.com/2011/09/road-trip.html

Hasty Brook is the loveliest place in my world. It's a little piece of heaven in northern Minnesota. Saturday, September 03, 2011. I haven't been around much this summer. Between changing from part time to full time work, and our major time commitment to our building at Hasty Brook, (and I will admit to spending more time on Facebook), I have neglected this blog. Life gets busy and my good intentions to get back to blogging slipped away. My best birding friend Ruthie Johnson, the Nature Knitter. Check ou...

Hasty Brook is the loveliest place in my world. It's a little piece of heaven in northern Minnesota. Tuesday, April 05, 2011. The End of March at Hasty Brook. Our most recent visit to Hasty Brook was the last weekend of March. We arrived after dark but as always, I went upstairs and went out on the balcony to check the feeders and look about. The first thing I noticed was the sound. I could hear water. The creek was open and running! I am going to miss the Redpolls. Thanks for the nudges Richard. This pl...

August 8, 2012. Summer moments to long for. It can be said, that every summer I live moments I will recall in the future and feel longing for.
