Wednesday, November 30, 2011. Meck, Wake on new school choice index. When it comes to educational choice and competition, Mecklenburg County ranks about in the middle of the pack, while Wake County is among the leaders. That's the conclusion of The Brookings Institution. Ratings of the nation's 25 largest school districts, along with the charter and private schools that offer alternatives in those counties. My adventures in India. August 7, 2013. On July 12, we visited a government (public) school in a small village outside Pune. We were greeted with the traditional sweets and tilak. A red mark on the forehead, for blessing. At the entrance gate to the school on the ground, students had drawn a colorful geometric design, which some of my former 3rd grade group will recognize as alpanas. In this region of India, they are called rangolis. With their mouths, of course! Shaking hands) I am a bird and I fly in t...

Wednesday, June 26, 2013. This is a picture of the gift bag I am taking to India- one for my host family and one for the school host. I still need to swing by dear ole MHS. There were some out of towners mingling in the gift shop and a few were asking for restaurant recommendations for the Spruce Pine area. I gladly dispensed my two cents. I ended up leaving my contact information and may potentially volunteer some as time permits! I also hit up Appalachian Craft Center. Finally, I'm working with 2 other...

It’s difficult because as I continue to remember and deconstruct things, they become more complex and harder to express as merely the “surface” of events. I think the most important thing I learned is that, despite India’s troubles, there are many folks there who are making a difference in a paradigm –. On Adventure of...
