The name of Philonikos was added after the original burial of Lysippos. Because Lysippos and Philonikos died while away from their home city of Thebes, their ethnic ‘Theban’ is recorded. An exploration of the prosopography and social networks of a Roman Town. Ad III Nones Iulius. Our culture and civilisation owe so much to the classical age: did you know we use the Roman alphabet? That the word ‘alphabet’ is a Greek word? That we use the Julian Calendar, named for Julius Caesar, and that he also gave his name to a method of birth? That the way we tell the time was determined thousands of years ago in Mesopotamia, and that the Greeks and Romans took it to the ends of their empires along with their languages?
