Books & Reviews. The Magic Building Where English Majors Work: Making Sense of Creative Writing’s Job Problem. Posted at 5:58 am on September 10, 2014 21. Note: The student I describe is a composite character of many students Iâ ve met in my 20 years of teaching.]. A few months ago, Tracy came to my office. She was majoring in something practical, â but I love reading, and I love writing,â she said. She wanted me to talk her into becoming a creative writing major. But she needed assurances. Â Yeah, there...

The Reluctant Adult: A brook of blessings.
http://thereluctantadult.blogspot.com/2010/12/brook-of-blessings.html
Random thoughts and assorted strong opinions. Friday, December 24, 2010. A brook of blessings. The way bodies move genuinely to beats. Is, after all, gorgeous and affecting. Dance until you're sweating. And beads of perspiration remind you of life's best things. Down your back like a brook of blessings. I became afraid to make a move because it seemed like every time I got a little better, I got a full smackdown. Terry Tempest Williams wrote this wonderful book called Leap. The Reluctant Adult: Blood libel: not just a catchphrase
http://thereluctantadult.blogspot.com/2011/01/blood-libel-not-just-catchphrase.html
Random thoughts and assorted strong opinions. Wednesday, January 12, 2011. Blood libel: not just a catchphrase. So by now we all know what the phrase 'blood libel' means in the context of religion. But just in case:. The blood libel is a false accusation that Jews sacrifice Christian children either to use the blood for various "medicinal" purposes or to prepare Passover matzo or for vengeance and mock crucifixions. Sounds ridiculous. Who would believe that? When we were saying our goodbyes, I said, "Tha...

Blackprint Poetry: Faces in the Sand
http://blackprintpoetry.blogspot.com/2011/06/faces-in-sand.html
If your life is burning, then poetry is just the ash. Friday, June 17, 2011. Faces in the Sand. Whether it had been. The shining round Moon,. The eye of light in the starless night. Or rather the freezing touch. Of the golden gentle sand,. I could not realize. Which had found me. Softly dragging my feet. In that majestically desert beach. Oh Lord, how I wish. The place had truly been so. For anywhere I looked. There was no one to be seen. Neither gently lit by the cold white light. Shrieks. Bellows&#...

Summer, sand and sandwiches. As i sit down to write this post, my mind rushes back to those first, early fall days of school. sitting at my desk, hands folded and donning a new dress (. What a little lady. Expertly chosen by my mother, i’d hang on every word uttered by my adored teachers. then, at their direction and this was my favorite part i’d choose a shiny new, razor-sharp #2 pencil and begin to craft my annual essay about how i spent my summer vacation. An older me, sis at the Cape. In my mind, i s...

Little bird flies home. Witty hip. smart. generous. warm. as glamorous as any movie star of her era. my mom was the mom other kids wanted to have. on school field trips, at Brownie meetings and at birthday parties, my friends flocked around her, jockeying to be in the position of holding her hand. a shy kid, i hung back and observed as she split her attention between her many admirers. Um, i might have been a little jealous. A child with spindly legs and a petite appetite, my grandfather nicknamed her.

give me Liberty! |

When i was in high school, my dad and i acted out the same scene from our family play nearly every Friday night. he’d be sitting at the kitchen table reading the newspaper. i’d walk in and put my hand on his shoulder. Hey, dad. mom’s gonna be home in about an hour. what do you want to do for dinner? Any other day of the week, he’d already have something simmering on the stove. but not on Friday. dad would look up at me over his reading glasses and say, as if it were an epiphany,. How about getting a pizza.
