Climate Cassandra: Disrupting the world of growth
http://climate-cassandra.blogspot.com/2014/07/disrupting-world-of-growth.html
Thursday, 24 July 2014. Disrupting the world of growth. Here's a book I recommend very strongly. It's. Gilding is an interesting fellow. Former trade union organiser, former military officer, former head of Greenpeace Australia and now an international business consultant. The book contains a lot of familiar stuff: threat of climate change, history of international negotiations and so on. But the really interesting part is unfamiliar. I think these are his most original points:. More specifically he thin...

Climate Cassandra: Species Loss: It's later than you think
http://climate-cassandra.blogspot.com/2014/10/speciues-loss-its-later-than-you-think.html
Monday, 27 October 2014. Species Loss: It's later than you think. How many species are going extinct? It's an impossible question, not least because we don't know how many species there are. We do, of course, know pretty accurately the numbers of species of birds, mammals and reptiles. The big uncertainties apply to insects, beetles and plants. But the real frightener is that even these numbers may be a serious underestimate. PNAS, April 30, 2013. vol. 110, no. 18. An analysis of threatened species from ...

Climate Cassandra: May 2014
http://climate-cassandra.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html
Friday, 9 May 2014. For me the Q&A at the St. Paul's meeting. Produced two striking moments. The first was when Christiana Figueres answered the question: What is the most important thing to do about climate change? Her answer - Put a price on carbon. That is, we need a carbon tax that is high enough to change behaviour. Admirably clear and brief. The second was when a member of the audience asked: Since modern capitalism system requires constant growth do we need to replace capitalism? Why are we not us...

Climate Cassandra: January 2014
http://climate-cassandra.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
Friday, 24 January 2014. Can we stop climate change in time? The science is clear. ‘Business as usual’ will increase global temperatures by at least four degrees – possibly much more. This will have catastrophic impacts on many parts of the world – and especially on the poorest people. That’s why one of our leading climate scientists, Prof Kevin Anderson of the Tyndall Centre, convened a Radical Emissions Reduction. It is technically feasible, though it will be very hard, to reduce emissions fast enough.

Climate Cassandra: September 2013

Friday, 20 September 2013. Nonsense and sense about ice. Tom Yulsman has a good article. He attacks David Rose's irresponsible journalism and summarises the Arctic ice evidence. I was interested to see the graph on ice VOLUME. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Consultancy on ICT and climate (with scenarios). Climate and Alternative Temperature Science. Climate Cassandra: August 2013
http://climate-cassandra.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
Saturday, 17 August 2013. Knowing ourselves: The Core of Green Political Philosophy. In ancient times the words inscribed in the forecourt to the temple of Apollo at Delphi were: “Know thyself”. Part of the meaning of this aphorism was that we should know that we are mortal men and women, not gods, and behave accordingly. The ancient Greeks condemned the arrogance which they called hubris. This ecological understanding is the basis of all Green philosophy. It has some direct implications:. Now Greens dif...

Climate Cassandra: Wind farms perform better than we feared
http://climate-cassandra.blogspot.com/2014/10/wind-farms-perform-better-than-we-feared.html
Monday, 13 October 2014. Wind farms perform better than we feared. Some commentators have claimed that the performance of wind farms will decline catastrophically with age. For instance, a report by Prof Gordon Hughes for the Renewable Energy Foundation claimed that the “. Normalised load factor for UK onshore wind farms declines from a peak of about 24% at age 1 to 15% at age 10 and 11% at age 15”. That implies an annual worsening of about 5% and would presumably be due to mechanical wear. Climate and A...

Climate Cassandra: Renewable Energy and Enfield
http://climate-cassandra.blogspot.com/2014/10/renewable-energy-and-enfield.html
Monday, 13 October 2014. Renewable Energy and Enfield. This post was originally written for the newsletter of the Enfield Society - which will print part of it.]. In planning applications and fuel bills, on Welsh hillsides and in the North Sea, we keep hearing about renewable energy. But why? What’s the fuss about? Our first thought should obviously be to use less energy (and thus save money! There a LOT of scope for this. Homes built to the highest standards (passivhaus) need 90% less heating energy...

Climate Cassandra: The Global ConDominion?
http://climate-cassandra.blogspot.com/2014/06/the-global-condominion.html
Monday, 16 June 2014. In my Emergency Braking scenario. I consider the possibility that a major power which I call Maverick (probably the US or China) becomes so concerned about climate change that it acts unilaterally to stop it. There's another, at least equally plausible, scenario in which the USA and China act together. Here's how it might play out. A new Planetary Crisis Mitigation treaty is drafted within 60 days and signed by the major powers in 30 more. It creates a new UN Agency, the UNPCM A...
