SO WHAT'S THIS THEN? So I had the idea to do what every computer science graduate does - write a raytracer. This would expose me to practical mathematics relevant to both my day job and my area of interest. Problem was, I didn't like the idea of having to learn a programming language in order to do this - the brain cells dedicated to understanding the finer points of memory management seemed better expended elsewhere. It just so happened that through my use of Maya I had learned MEL, so why not use that?

It has now been a full three years since I last raced in the kart. It is amazing how time flies and I never intended to take this long away from the track! However a demanding job, new addition to the family, and purchasing/renovating a home all took their toll. With some luck the kart will return to the black stuff in 2011, at the very least for some practice sessions at Wakefield. Octane render is an amazing gpu-exclusive physically based renderer. the reason I love it - no render settings! The following images are experiments created with octane purely for fun. Skull lighting study, feb 2014. Misc octane experiments, late 2012. Light study using a basic setup. Light study using a basic setup. Playing with glass and shallow dof. Indirect light study (vehicle from turbosquid). Instancer test - the dust is created with over 16 billion rectangular shapes.

It's kinda funny how perceptions can be changed and influenced. I always considered Photoshop to be the absolute last tool suited to drawing on the computer - it just seemed so clunky and too generalised. It also lacks paint based modes for mixing colours. So it is with much surprise that the drawing above was created with Photoshop.

Haven't found the motivation to finish this one, but posting it anyway so I can move on. I liked the image as it was architectural and with a strong composition. Problem was, I somehow got bogged down in really fiddly detail - probably owing to the image having a lot of fiddly detail which I wasn't confident in simplifying.
