Enough with the Java bashing, already
http://daveho.github.io/2012/10/11/enough-with-the-java-bashing.html
Enough with the Java bashing, already. Everyone has their favorite programming languages. Lately, Java seems to be the object of a certain amount of scorn. I realize that Java is not the world’s most elegant language, and that other languages are superior in various ways. However, much of the Java criticism I see fails to acknowledge Java’s merits. In order to have an intellectually honest discussion, I think we need to acknowledge. The good and bad. That’s what I will try to do in this post. Another way...

I’m moving my blog to github using Jekyll. Although I’ve already published one website using Jekyll. I’m finding the initial site provided by Jekyll Bootstrap to be a bit complicated. We’ll see how it goes. Blog comments powered by Disqus.

Blog: Resurrection
http://daveho.github.io/2013/09/24/blog-resurrection.html
So I haven’t posted anything on my blog for almost one year. So, I thought an update, and a resolution to post stuff more often, might be appropriate :-). Here’s what has been happening:. I’ve reluctanctly shelved my mc68008 project: I fully intend to get it working at some point, but based on my available free time, that will probably be sometime around the year 2025. I have been spending most of my free time working on CloudCoder. An open source programming exercise system inspired by CodingBat.

The joy of subprocesses in Java
http://daveho.github.io/2013/10/10/the-joy-of-subprocesses-in-java.html
The joy of subprocesses in Java. To support C/C exercises in CloudCoder. We compile each submission using g , run the resulting executable for each test case, and check the result of each execution. Running an OS-level process in Java is both simple and complicated. The java.lang.Process. The complicated part is that we have some additional requirements:. CloudCoder needs to know precisely how and why the process terminated. For example, was it killed by a signal? To simplify all of these additional requ...

CloudCoder Blog - CloudCoder version 0.1.3 released
http://cloudcoderdotorg.github.io/2015/01/09/version-0-1-3-released.html
CloudCoder version 0.1.3 released. On January 09, 2015. I found a few minor issues in version 0.1.2. So there is now a 0.1.3 release. Here are the specific improvements:. C language submissions are now compiled with. This allows, for example, loop variables to be declared in the initialization of a for loop. Fixed a regression where clicking on a module didn’t restrict the problems shown to just that module. The problem list and progress summary on the home page now list exercises in order of due date.

CloudCoder Blog - CloudCoder version 0.1.2 released
http://cloudcoderdotorg.github.io/2015/01/06/version-0-1-2-released.html
CloudCoder version 0.1.2 released. On January 06, 2015. The new year brings a shiny new CloudCoder release: version 0.1.2! I’ve finally had some time to spend on CloudCoder after a crazy fall semester. (Note to self: in the future, avoid volunteering to host conferences.). There are two notable changes. First, I fixed a regression introduced in version 0.1.1 that caused compilation failures for C submissions. (Sorry for the breakage! Another nice improvement is a new user account tab:.

CloudCoder Blog - We have a blog now
http://cloudcoderdotorg.github.io/2014/07/04/we-have-a-blog-now.html
We have a blog now. On July 04, 2014. Welcome to the CloudCoder blog! The current news is that we released version 0.1.0 on June 4th: check out the installation instructions. If you’re interested in trying it out. There are lots of minor improvements, including a new UI layout for working on exercises that puts the exercise description next to the code editor (click for larger image):. This layout makes it quite a bit easier for students to refer to the exercise description as they work.
