CHRISTMAS MOUNTAINS OASIS

Click any photo to enlarge. Wednesday, March 21, 2018. Enjoyed the oasis today, even though my vertigo was a little worse than it had been for the last couple of days. While photographing Pipevine Swallowtails on the blooming Mountain Laurel bush I discovered this skipper that I didn't recognize. Brian ID'd it as a Sheep Skipper. Not a lifer, but the first one I had seen at the oasis. Brian saw some here in 2010. So that was fun for me. Tuesday, March 20, 2018. Icy first day of spring. My vertigo is almo...

CHRISTMAS MOUNTAINS OASIS: 2002-2003

https://cmoasis.blogspot.com/p/2002-2003.html

Click any photo to enlarge. I hate it when we get a late cold front after everything has already fully leafed out. It happens about half the time. Most plants recover quickly, especially if it snows and doesn't stay real cold for long. Because of those late fronts most of the apricot crop freezes almost every year. Below you can barely make out the dike/dam as it follows the natural arroyo above the oasis (far right). Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). The Beginnings of CMO. Present at CMO March - October.

CHRISTMAS MOUNTAINS OASIS: 1997-1998

https://cmoasis.blogspot.com/p/1997-2000.html

Click any photo to enlarge. Life was great. We wanted to spend more time at the oasis, listening to owls, enjoying the ambiance, so we built a small screened cabin in 1997. I planted more trees. After the cabin flooded a couple of times, we elevated it higher. Called "fine-tuning." It has never flooded since. Starting the third pond, dubbed the "stucco" tank because I ended up stuccoing it all by hand. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). The Beginnings of CMO. Present at CMO March - October. Good day at CMO.

CHRISTMAS MOUNTAINS OASIS: 2008

https://cmoasis.blogspot.com/p/2008.html

Click any photo to enlarge. It's looking good. I even had my first Century Plant (Harvard Agave) bloom behind the wildlife pond. Beebrush perfumes the air unbelievably. The water feature is looking great. Birds and birders are enjoying the place. I even got Columbine to bloom. I slowed down on the planting, but not much. Mostly now confined to planting flowers, bushes, and a few of the most native trees. Some come up by themselves, and some of those I move to more desirable locations. Good day at CMO.

CHRISTMAS MOUNTAINS OASIS: 1999-2000

https://cmoasis.blogspot.com/p/1999-2000.html

Click any photo to enlarge. The first two tanks fill up from the upper diversion dam in the arroyo, but for the third, stucco tank to fill we had to make a second diversion dam. No water goes into that tank until the first two tanks are full and it runs over the first dam. It didn't take long before all 3 tanks were full. Here is the last vegetable garden we planted. I don't remember what year it was, probably 2000, but may have been a year later. Here's the elevated, flood-proof cabin. Here is how the "...

CHRISTMAS MOUNTAINS OASIS: 2005

https://cmoasis.blogspot.com/p/2005.html

Click any photo to enlarge. This first photo is of the house. On the next photo of the oasis notice the white Cattle Egrets perched on the canopy we constructed for our motorhome. (I sold the motorhome after Sherwood died and now use the canopy for a shaded picnic area.). Above is an AZ Cypress tree on the left, Cottonwood, center, and a Big Tooth Maple is the small tree in front of the cabin. Here are a few more pictures from 2005 that I like.
