Backcountry Skiing.Your Winter Window Into The Chugach. Worthington Glacier – Mountain Biking. August 13, 2015. It’s been a different type of biking this summer for me as I am taking a break from my road bike and time trials that have dominated my last few summers. My mountain bike has been regulated to local transportation during the winter and summer, with occasional rides around town in places like Mineral Creek. Last week I rode all […]. The Department of Natural Resources has denied two(2) Land Use Permit applications by Black Ops submitted last spring One permit would have allowed Black Ops use of a portion of the old Valdez Heli-Camp site at Mile 18. In the decision the Department noted potential conflicts with Alaska Snowboard Guides who have a permit for the site issued in 2014. Here are the Decision documents. Wizard...

Backcountry Skiing.Your Winter Window Into The Chugach. June 23, 2016. Bradford Washburn opened his first photo business in Valdez in 1936. It was from the tidal mudflats near town where he took his camera to the sky over mountains for the first time and framed glaciers and mountains, including the Shoup. The rest is history as far as his glacier photography and of course his mountaineering. I get plenty of […]. Spring Ski Report – Video – All Good Things Must End(for now). June 16, 2016. Backcountry Skiing.Your Winter Window Into The Chugach. Backcountry News – Taylor and Salys Go Big. August 7, 2015. Seems like there is renewed interest in Valdez peak bagging this summer. Though many of the summits around Valdez were first climbed in the early 80’s by the aggressive “Peak-a-Week Club”, winter interest soon left the peaks a paradise for winter ascents and ski descents. Thursday, April 21, 2011. The crust hadn't set up many places yet. I knew there was some in the Russian Lakes Area from a trip I was on the weekend prior. This trip was a mix of crust on groomed trails, variable off-trail crust, and great crust on Lower Russian Lake. Not perfect conditions, but it was great to start enjoying the short crust season! A little bit of glaciation on the Russian Lakes Trail. Prescribed burn area to provide moose with denser vegetation for browsing in the future. I explored the...

Sunday, February 5, 2012. 02/03-05/12 The powder hut is sweet! But don't tell anyone. I first heard about this cabin two weeks ago from a co-worker. I'm familiar with most of the walk-in cabins in South-central Alaska, so why hadn't I heard of this one? The three of us headed out from the Tram parking lot at 4pm. It had snowed over a foot since the cats left in the morning! The riding was great the next day. It was another meter powder day (albeit breezy)! The next morning the winds really picked up and ...

Sunday, October 28, 2012. 10/27/12 Mount Monarch (7108'). The bikes didn't save much time, but the short ways we could ride helped us get to the summit earlier. This gave us more time to navigate some critical sections with some light. In the summer much of this (ATV) trail would be very muddy and unpleasant to hike or bike on. If you can look past that it's beautiful country. Nice section of the Pinochle Creek Trail. First look at Mount Monarch. Descending to Hicks Creek. Heading up the scree. The Photo...
