The Coastal ISC is a non-profit organisation which has been a leader in managing invasive plants, and more recently, invasive species; for the past 9 years. We have built a suite of on-the-ground experience, wealth of knowledge and diverse partners. We are well equiped to distribute resources, provide tools, advice, action plans and support to minimize the negative impacts of invasive alien species in the region. European Fire Ants have been found in select communities in central and southern Vancouver Island. An action plan is in place involving key partners in BC including provincial and local governments, Thomson Rivers University, the Invasive Species Council of BC and regional species committees. This non-native, invasive species is an aggressive ant that swarms and has a painful sting. Uncommon cases of stings have resulted in allergic reactions requiring medical attention. In natural ecosystems, invasive plants displace or destroy native plant populations. Many rare and endangered native plants are also at risk from extinction from non-native plant invasion. By removing the natural wildlife, invasive plants also reduce wildlife habitat. Shallow root systems can increase erosion, causing higher surface runoff, which increases stream sediment and reduces water quality.
