http://cocktailmuseum.blogspot.com/2012/12/blog-post.html
A celebration of cocktails that have been lost, forgotten or mutilated over time. Saturday, December 29, 2012. Because the Sunday between Christmas and New Year's tends to be a particularly busy night, we will not be presenting a menu this evening. But if you decide to come revel with us, we do have a treat for you - the Japanese Cocktail (cognac, orgeat, lemon peel, bitters) prepared with the original bitters in the oldest recipes, Boker's. Next month: Best of 2012. Stay tuned. Scat Records, my label.

A celebration of cocktails that have been lost, forgotten or mutilated over time. Saturday, December 1, 2012. Exhibit #124: San Francisco Favorites via Trader Vic, 1968. Vic introduces them thusly:. 8220;Since the Gold Rush days San Francisco has been known as a city of two-fisted drinkers. Martinis, hiballs, and scotch on the rocks outsell anything else, but quite a few discerning people like something that tastes good. Here are a few of the favorites.”. It just wouldn’t be Sunday if there weren&#...

A celebration of cocktails that have been lost, forgotten or mutilated over time. Saturday, December 8, 2012. Exhibit #125: Maple, Smoke and Fire. Cocktail Museum Sundays at the Royale: R&D series: Old Waldorf Martini Variations
http://cocktailmuseum.blogspot.com/2013/03/r-series-old-waldorf-martini-variations.html
A celebration of cocktails that have been lost, forgotten or mutilated over time. Saturday, March 23, 2013. R&D series: Old Waldorf Martini Variations. Given that the proportions of that era were much less austere than today, we experience the Martini in its most youthful, approachable, and changeable state. The increased herbal presence provides a delicate canvas upon which even the slightest variation can have quite the ripple effect, and the dizzying number of variants begins to make some sense. First...

The Institute for Alcoholic Experimentation: Don't cry for me: Argentine cocktails, anyone?
http://instituteforalcoholicexperimentation.blogspot.com/2012/01/dont-cry-for-me-argentine-cocktails.html
Monday, 30 January 2012. Don't cry for me: Argentine cocktails, anyone? Tato with a clericot. That he has just made me. Santiago Policastro, known as “Pichin”. The cocktail menu at Galante is divided into sections: first come Pichin’s own classics, adapted from recipes he published in his 1955 book Tragos Mágicos. Tea that everyone stands around sipping. It comes in large, loose leaves and is drunk through a metal straw called a bombilla. An El Pato, with toothsome nibbles in the background. 1724 has a f...

The Institute for Alcoholic Experimentation: Kopparberg Blackberry & Lime and Kopparberg Winter Fruits
http://instituteforalcoholicexperimentation.blogspot.com/2012/11/kopparberg-blackberry-lime-and.html
Friday, 30 November 2012. Kopparberg Blackberry and Lime and Kopparberg Winter Fruits. Blackberry with the faintest hint of lime. Some sweetness, sweet berry, quite creamy, medium-high fizz. OK, but not amazing. Quite fresh and crisp; I still don't taste any lime but thirst-quenching and nice enough. The plain blackberry Kopparberg was one of my favourite, this isn't a patch on that—the inclusion of lime seems rather pointless. Kopparberg with Winter Fruit. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The Institute for Alcoholic Experimentation: A naming of names
http://instituteforalcoholicexperimentation.blogspot.com/2015/07/a-naming-of-names.html
Sunday, 26 July 2015. A naming of names. Events.* There is really only one small area, the corner of a shelf, that offers enough horizontal space for a mug of tea.). A courier once came to deliver a sample, addressed to “The Institute for Alcoholic Experimentation”. I don’t know what he expected to find, but Mrs H. clearly heard him through the front door, on the phone to his boss, saying, “…But it’s just a house! Institute for Alcoholic Experimentation. The Institute for Alcoholic Experimentation: There is Worcestershire Sauce. And there is Worcestershire Sauce Special Edition
http://instituteforalcoholicexperimentation.blogspot.com/2011/10/there-is-worcestershire-sauce-and-there.html
Friday, 14 October 2011. There is Worcestershire Sauce. And there is Worcestershire Sauce Special Edition. If you thought the attempt to create a premium version of Marmite with Marmite XO. Was unexpected, then check this out. Lea and Perrins Worcestershire Sauce now comes in a luxury version called Worcestershire Sauce Special Edition. (In what sense a sauce can come in an “edition” I do not know. It hasn’t exactly been “edited”.). Of course there is a mixological significance to all of this, because Wo...

The Institute for Alcoholic Experimentation: A new gold standard for mincemeat
http://instituteforalcoholicexperimentation.blogspot.com/2010/12/new-gold-standard-for-mincemeat.html
Wednesday, 15 December 2010. A new gold standard for mincemeat. David's mincemeat vodka—with IAE gong, I notice. Took delivery of Mr Bridgman-Smith’s homemade mincemeat vodka for the Candlelight Club. The other day. I don’t know what the bottles originally contained but he’s made his own labels—and I see he has awarded himself an IAE Gold Medal. Well, what’s the point in running an institute if you can’t shower yourself with awards, prizes and commendations? Chestnuts on an Open Fire . Sweet and sour mul...

The Institute for Alcoholic Experimentation: Down on the farm – Rock Hill Farms, Single Barrel Whiskey
http://instituteforalcoholicexperimentation.blogspot.com/2012/07/down-on-farm-rock-hill-farms-single.html
Thursday, 19 July 2012. Down on the farm – Rock Hill Farms, Single Barrel Whiskey. This year saw my first visit to the Imbibe trade show, where there were lots and lots of lovely brands to explore. One of the stands that immediately caught my eye upon arrival was the one representing the Buffalo Trace Distillery. Rock Hill Farms Single Barrel Bourbon is made by the Sazerac Company in Frankfort, Kentucky and was introduced in 1990. A lovely, full-bodied bourbon, with lots of development of flavour, measur...

The Institute for Alcoholic Experimentation: Curiosity Cabinet #9 - Bol's Silver Strike
http://instituteforalcoholicexperimentation.blogspot.com/2012/07/curiosity-cabinet-9-bols-silver-strike.html
Thursday, 12 July 2012. Curiosity Cabinet #9 - Bol's Silver Strike. Most people who have ever been to a night club or teenage/student party will probably have come across Goldschlager (a cinnamon liqueur containing floating, gold flakes) and will probably have found the some plonker who is wielding it, trying to impress people and saying that the gold flakes are there to cut the inside of your mouth/throat so that the alcohol is more quickly absorbed. This is, obviously, rubbish. The silver flakes settle...

The Institute for Alcoholic Experimentation: Your smooth-talking bar steward…*
http://instituteforalcoholicexperimentation.blogspot.com/2015/07/your-smooth-talking-bar-steward.html
Thursday, 9 July 2015. Your smooth-talking bar steward…*. A friend of mine, who is an actor specialising in historical roles, rang me up in March and asked if I could help him out. He’d taken a small job for English Heritage. But had now been given an audition for Mr Selfridge. On the same day. Would I mind taking over from him in the English Heritage job? The entrance hall at Eltham Palace where we shot the video. Stephen and Virginia aboard the Virginia. The cocktails were evidently chosen for the rele...
