Photo Credit: Aaron N. Tubbs. By Aaron N. Tubbs. August 23, 2014. August 23, 2014. A couple of weeks ago, we went to visit Tuthilltown Spirits. They’re based in New York’s Hudson Valley and they distill a bunch of interesting things. Notably they are known for their Hudson Whiskeys, distributed by William Grant & Sons. I gave the kit a spin with two initial attempts, based on recipes from Tuthilltown. The first was a barrel-aged Negroni (made with their white whiskey rather than gin). M said of the white...

Was another holiday gift this year. Embarrassingly, I was not aware of it despite following Dave Arnold’s work for years. There’s a lot of value in explaining what’s going on and making available the techniques that do not require exotic or exorbitant materials or equipment. Using the So Simple Theme.

Photo Credit: Aaron N. Tubbs. By Aaron N. Tubbs. May 19, 2014. May 19, 2014. This is a fun one with very little substance. I poured a 2012 Left Coast Cellars Latitude 45 Pinot Noir. Into two different glasses. M and I tried the wine from both glasses, but I intimated that she was tasting two different wines. The reaction was pretty strong: The wine from one of the glasses was rather nice and from the other rather awful. In other words, wine glass marketing is a load of crap. The Zalto stem is hand-blown ...

Photo Credit: Aaron N. Tubbs. By Aaron N. Tubbs. April 10, 2014. April 07, 2014. Ice and its use in cocktails remains a confusing topic. Serious Eats has a great introduction. Some of these themes have come up on the blog previously; the relationship between dilution and drink temperature remains one of the least-understood concepts. Yeah, it's horrible ice, but it's cold. Chunks shaved off a large block of ice can be relatively clear, with little effort. Some huge chunks of ice picked off a larger block.

Attempts to produce 60mm crystal clear ice spheres with minimal effort. Each gadget runs $85. For that tariff one gets three plastic/silicone pieces and a vacuum mug. It’s difficult to suggest the components are worth $85:. The assembled parts and the vacuum mug. Extraction is less straightforward. In fact, it’s a pain in the ass. It takes some practi...

Photo Credit: Aaron N. Tubbs. By Aaron N. Tubbs. June 08, 2014. June 08, 2014. Generally speaking, I’m a big fan of Sixpoint’s beers. As described by the brewer, Sixpoint RAD is a unique blend of fruit juices with ale to create the original summer crusher. Better when the can is still closed. The can is attractive and unique. That’s about the last nice thing I can say about this beer. It smells like the floor of a college bar on Sunday morning. It tastes like vomit. It even looks like vomit.

While I love the Hoppy and Aromatic glasses, the Sauvin Glass. Is a great example of form and function combining in concert. I get by with a little beer from my friends. Despite my gargantuan hands, holding the snifter base to warm a beverage within the glass is an awkward proposal given the diameter of the hollow base. Much like The Imperial Glass.
