Monner - Monitor CPU, memory and network whilst running a program
http://www.colinhowe.co.uk/2012/aug/12/monner
Monner - Monitor CPU, memory and network whilst running a program. August 12th, 2012. I'm looking at re-implementing one of our services in various different ways. To help me decide between the different ways I want to run a benchmark of the services and monitor how much of a systems resources they use. After a lot of digging the best solutions I found involved running various different commands, scraping together the output and then cobbling together a report. Not fun. And will output results like:.
MongoDB - Collection Per User Performance
http://www.colinhowe.co.uk/2012/jul/09/mongodb-collection-per-user-performance
MongoDB - Collection Per User Performance. July 9th, 2012. On the MongoDB site there is. A suggestion that collections can be used to cluster data and get better performance as a result. The theory is sound, so what about performance? In this experiment I used two c1.medium (high CPU) instances on AWS - one to run the test and one to be the server. There was an index on user/time on every collection. There were three variants:. One collection for all users. One collection for each user. One collection fo...
Powering Conversocial's Analytics
http://www.colinhowe.co.uk/2012/jul/03/powering-conversocials-analytics
July 3rd, 2012. We recently released our new analytics functionality for our customers. It allows them to see stats like:. Number of messages received each day. Messages processed by each agent. Response times split into buckets (less than 30 minutes, less than 1 hour, etc). All of this can be viewed for different date ranges and comparisons performed to previous time periods. We've done some interesting things to make this possible and I'd like to share them. Why have an internal API? Upgrading / changi...
SSDs on AWS - Impact on Conversocial
http://www.colinhowe.co.uk/2012/jul/23/ssds-on-aws--impact-on-conversocial
SSDs on AWS - Impact on Conversocial. July 23rd, 2012. AWS releases SSD instances. A new instance type with two 1TB SSDs attached locally. These SSDs are fast. Especially compared to EBS. EBS will push to about 700 random reads/second when RAIDed and network conditions are kind. The new SSDs will do about 120,000 random reads/second, a 170x performance boost, irrespective of network conditions. We switched our MongoDB over. Our average response time across all of Conversocial. This is a feature we've bee...
A tip for when TDD gets hard
http://www.colinhowe.co.uk/2010/07/12/a-tip-for-when-tdd-gets-hard
A tip for when TDD gets hard. July 12th, 2010. One of the biggest reasons I see for TDD not being used enough is that it makes things harder. The typical complaints are:. I have to setup/mock too much". I want to test my complicated internals without exposing them". I'm writing a web-app, it's hard to get the interactions right". This likely indicates that your classes are too coupled. Consider the following:. Is there any functionality that is in the wrong place? Have you considered inversion of control.

UK shoots and places. February 2, 2016. I have recently returned to Venice together with some photography friends, taking advantage of cheap fares in January! Venice has to be one of my most favourite places: there is so much to photograph! On this trip I aimed to expand my portfolio of images taken at dusk or at night. Posted in Overseas travel. This WordPress.com site is the cat’s pajamas. Whistle blowing, ethical issues, and being sustainable. Does the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) have any problems with this? The pool operations have caused health and safety concerns with both the staff and the facilities have been a major issue with some of the YMCA’s across Canada. The employees are lax when it comes to enforcing standards of procedures related to maintenance of the pools. March 14, 2014. Let me tell you they have built strong co...

Colin Howe’s Blog. Just another WordPress.com weblog. August 27, 2009. I’ve been looking at Scala recently and I’m impressed. It’s got a nice mix of imperative and functional styles that means that it can be really useful and easy to code in. As an example I thought I’d knock up an implementation of RK4. The work-horse of RK4 is implemented as follows:. A whole bunch of times. Coming from a Java background this is pleasantly less noisy (compare with f.calculate(t, y) etc). Steps of size h. It is sufficie...
