McClendon. October 5, 2010. A bright new future. Excerpt from an emergency meeting held on a planet somewhere in the Milky Way. Collecting Worlds: deeper evaluations...

http://www.collectingworlds.blogspot.com/2010/10/deeper-evaluations.html

Travel well, leave none behind. October 18, 2010. I see both sides presented in this week’s readings. I agree that students should not be graded in such a way that causes them to stop writing, and I agree that there needs to be some sort of evaluation process, which results in academic grades. There needs to be more conversation between the student and professor for the student to gauge his/her progress other than a grade. This debate clearly is not finished. Posted by K. S. McClendon. A bright new future.

Collecting Worlds: About Me

http://www.collectingworlds.blogspot.com/p/collecting.html

Travel well, leave none behind. As a child I collected rocks. Not just any rock, special rocks that had stories to tell. Everywhere my family went, I made sure to find the most unique rock before leaving. When one caught my attention I held it in my palm measuring its worthiness. If the rock passed the test, it came home. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). I created every world those rocks came from. I wrote about the creatures roaming their home world, the habitats painting their landscapes. I wrote ab...Hours...

Travel well, leave none behind. September 21, 2010. I also received the typical reaction, “How are you going to make money at that? 8221; and “Shouldn’t you be working towards a degree with more opportunity? 8221; My brother’s only question was, “So when you going to start drinking, smoking pot, and divorce your husband? Reading this week’s assignment, Box Office Poison. That will take much longer to change. In a way, those writers who are household names in our society feed into these images. I like the...

Collecting Worlds: seeing clearly...

http://www.collectingworlds.blogspot.com/2010/11/seeing-clearly.html

Travel well, leave none behind. November 29, 2010. The important thing to remember is that as teachers we need to guide our students helping them find the same tools we found in the fog and that we will never stop learning. Posted by K. S. McClendon. That is so true. Ive noticed in some of my writing classes that I dont know how to properly articulate something about a piece that needs to be fixed. Also, thanks. Its encouraging to think that my professors are still students in one way or another. As a ch...

October 12, 2010. Teaching Creative Writing to Undergraduates: Chapters 1-6. Filed under: Reading Assignments. 8212; M.E. Riley @ 4:06 am. I really enjoyed these readings. The tone is relatable rather than demeaning and all the advice feels that of experience instead of “Well, this is just how it’s done.” Since there was so much material to cover, I’ll highlight my favorites or mention areas that invoked questions or further thought:. 8220;We might teach them all, but we don’t teach. October 19, 2010. Filed under: Reading Assignments. 8212; M.E. Riley @ 8:57 am. The latter is pure bravery. How can a professor get away with defining a letter grade as useless? I secretly wish I could do that, but shhh, don’t tell anyone. How awesome would it be to write just for writing’s sake? Not to prove oneself to a professor/classroom/standard, but just for the beauty of writing? This sucks, man. Is this dreamland or could this potentially be a format for proper “grading”? 2 Comments ». The whole ...

November 2, 2010. Article Discussions/Morning Rant, part 2. Filed under: Reading Assignments. 8212; M.E. Riley @ 8:23 am. Why are we so concerned about “why writers write”? The new-kid-on-campus freshman wants to write a sonnet about his smokin’ R.A? I sit in World Lit and draw a willow tree and then write it a poem? I find that these articles, particularly Putting Wings on the Invisible, are stretching too far for the wrong things. Why are we focusing on. Instead of how, whom, and when? 8220;Myers repor...
