Computational Social Science

Friday, January 16, 2015. According to both the International Cartographic Association (ICA) and the United Nations, it's apparently International Map Year. A very happy International Map Year to everyone. In the past year, I've been enjoying attending mapping parties thrown by the Humanitarian OSM. Group and using their Tasking Manager. In the coming year, I'm especially excited to see what comes of the Missing Maps Project. Tuesday, June 17, 2014. MSF Scientific Day: Understanding the Spread of Disease.

Computational Social Science: Reboot!

http://www.computationalsocialscience.blogspot.com/2014/06/reboot.html

Monday, June 2, 2014. After a long silence, I can report that I've FINISHED MY THESIS and am reemerging into the world of humans. To that end, I'll attempt to be actually blogging in the near future, god help us all. Since last I posted, I've had a few big-ticket items I wanted to mention:. I successfully wrote and defended my thesis. As of May 17. I am now Dr. Wise (definitely either a superhero or supervillain name, it remains to be seen which). Was generous enough to award me the best paper award.

Tuesday, March 26, 2013. The Deluge: Twitter and Hurricane Sandy. The tweets were scraped by team member Jacek Radzikowski. Who is also available on Twitter here. In this post, I distinguish between what I call "geotagged" tweets (tweets with associated coordinates) and "geocoded" tweets (tweets with locational information that was run through the Yahoo PlaceFinder. To produce a set of coordinates). 69x10 5 with some info ( 65%). 10x10 4 with coordinates ( 1%). Thursday, March 7, 2013. Sustainable Agricu...

GIS and Agent-Based Modeling: February 2015

http://www.gisagents.org/2015_02_01_archive.html

Thursday, February 12, 2015. What now seems like a very long long time ago, when I was getting up to speed with Agent-based modeling and GIS, I came across a great edited book entitled " Dynamics in Human and Primate Societies: Agent-Based Modeling of Social and Spatial Processes. One chapter in particular that I really enjoyed because of its clarity and use of data was by Kohler et al. It has now been ported to Repast. And developed further by an NSF supported program called Village Ecodynamics Project.
