The Concrete Gardener

Friday, March 9, 2018. Lent, raising money, vegetable gardens. Then suddenly, a few days in, it’s ok, sortof peaceful and calm. Eug and I talk a bit more than usual, I’m more aware of the kids’ need for some special moments in their day (as now I share this moment with them rather than seeking it after they’re asleep), I think more about the big picture. This month, thinking about the big picture led me to ask for money. Yup, now you can like it on Facebook! Links to this post. Friday, February 23, 2018.

The Concrete Gardener: April 2014

http://www.concretegardener.com/2014_04_01_archive.html

Tuesday, April 8, 2014. Grocery shopping by bike, and exploring parks. Overall, biking around Cape Town has been going very well. We've been going to the beach less often than we did with a car, because the 1 hour train ride involves more planning than hopping in the car on a sunny day (and because it was starting to get cooler, although now it's crazy hot again). But we've been getting to know our neighborhood much better, and there is so much to explore. So here's our breakdown of how we're doing food ...

The Concrete Gardener: March 2014

http://www.concretegardener.com/2014_03_01_archive.html

Sunday, March 16, 2014. Sold the car, Biking on Main Road. We sold the car a couple of weeks ago, and we're entering into a rhythm with grocery shopping, life and parenting without the car. If you haven't checked it out yet, Eug wrote a post. About biking on Composting Faith! We make a lot of ice-cream. There is a corridor in the center of the city that involves a bike lane, though at times this lane is on the pavement and so, understandably, is full of pedestrians and unsafe to ride on. There are pa...

The Concrete Gardener: January 2015

http://www.concretegardener.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Saturday, January 31, 2015. Working, homesteading, and full-time parenting. So my current take on How-To-Make-Your-Life-Work-Perfectly-In-the-Far-Distant-Future: DON'T TRY! Ok, I sortof take that back. I'm all for minimalism and early retirement and healthy food and doing good work, but those things can become pretty God-like and all consuming, and there's no way they can deliver on their promises, nor should they. A lot of great blogs write about a version of life that makes me feel: Oh! Noah is four an...

The Concrete Gardener: November 2014

http://www.concretegardener.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Thursday, November 6, 2014. Eug and I share a file on our computers called "this week". Every week on Wednesday, we talk about how the previous week went, and our schedule for the next week. We also discuss what we should pray for, for the kids and for ourselves. Recently we've been taking the praying part more seriously, perhaps because we're in this uniquely change-filled time, where so much is out of our hands. Surviving the floor, and the millionth coat of paint. If you haven't, do! Links to this post.

The Concrete Gardener: Scheduled Unschooling

http://www.concretegardener.com/2015/04/scheduled-unschooling.html

Saturday, April 25, 2015. The kids love our plot at the moment- we now have a closed container with all our stuff, but building still hasn't begun. The first two meals of the day have also become entirely predicable and safe (oatmeal, yoghurt, toast, fruit, familiar raw vegetables), and this seems to be something that the kids have responded to positively. Dinner varies, but we seem to have finally got the timing down so that when we sit down to dinner (at, like, 4pm), the kids are hungry. Sortof. I'd lo...
