On the Martyr's Feast Day, Remembering the Protestant Taliban That Slew Him: miltonic
http://miltonic.livejournal.com/5737.html
On the Martyr's Feast Day, Remembering the Protestant Taliban That Slew Him. Today is the Anglican Church’s feast of Charles I, King and Martyr a saint whom Milton helped to murder. This is what Andrew Marvell wrote about this dreadful historical event:. From A Horatian Ode Upon Cromwell’s Return From Ireland. And Hampton shows what part. He had of wiser art,. Where, twining subtle fears with hope,. He wove a net of such a scope,. That Charles himself might chase. To Carisbrooke's narrow case:. Without a...

Satan and the Problem of Evil: miltonic

Satan and the Problem of Evil. Or "the fortunate fall."). God's no fool: he recognizes that in Pharaoh he's got a great antagonist. By hardening Pharaoh's heart, God keeps him in opposition so that he'll have an excuse to make his final punishment of the Egyptians all the more terrible ("all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die," remember? And the glory and power of God will shine out the greater. I think he's working the same strategy here in Paradise Lost. Confirms the felix culpa.

The Poetry of Dissolution: miltonic
http://miltonic.livejournal.com/5452.html
The Poetry of Dissolution. So far I have found the metre in Paradise Lost. So consistently magisterial, and the variances from the standard blank verse so frequently subtle, that I have a hard time drawing any clear poetic conclusions from it. Nevertheless, I am determined not to ignore Milton's poetry entirely in favour of his theology and allusions, so I want to take a close look at two short passages from Books II and III. He refers to "a steepe disadvantage of tyranny and superstition.". Milton creat...

"To soar / Above th'Aonian Mount": Christianity and Classicism: miltonic

To soar / Above th'Aonian Mount": Christianity and Classicism. My advent'rous Song, That with no middle flight intends to soar Above th'Aonian Mount, while it pursues Things unattempted yet in Prose or Rhyme. Here Milton promises that his epic will outdo anything attempted by those who have relied on inspiration from Classical sources. Mulciber" is another name for the pagan god Vulcan (or Hephaistos) and Milton appears to have taken his story almost directly out of Homer's Iliad. Post a new comment.

Reading Paradise Lost: miltonic
http://miltonic.livejournal.com/4755.html
There's a scene in Die Hard: With a Vengeance. In which a police search team lead by Inspector Cobb discovers an enormous and fiendishly elaborate chemical bomb in the basement of an elementary school. Cobb asks explosives expert Charles Weiss "can you defuse it? And Weiss, looking doubtfully at the device, replies, "I shouldn't even touch. This is the way I have felt about Paradise Lost. In favour of Samson Agonistes. Properly.) Since then, I have been so acutely aware of Milton's vast erudition, of...

I made sourdough bread!! - The House of Life
http://astartesyriaca.livejournal.com/216544.html
The House of Life. My life, that is). I made sourdough bread! Sep 3rd, 2009 at 10:08 PM. Making bread has been my new sanity project. My first two attempts didn't quite work - dense, bland, and in the case of the last, actually TOO sour. Apparently the third time's the charm. This time I started with some Extra Strong white bread flour. I used the starter method described here. It is soft, with a thin, crisp crust, and the most pleasant tangy sourdough taste! 5 comments Leave a comment. I think I'd proba...
