Consultation and Condition Reports. What we do not do. Portrait of a Soldier. It showed a considerable loss of original paint. The vertical lines on the right of the portrait are acid burns. Missing gesso is in-filled with special putty and subsequently in-painted. This painting had been subjected to much over painting during a previous restoration. The painting was hanging loosely from the stretcher. It has some holes, paint loss and other damage.

Consultation and Condition Reports. What we do not do. On the left we see this 17th century Dutch portrait as it came into the Studio. It had been partially cleaned by a dealer. Much of the remaining discoloured varnish had run in long drips down the painting and the cleaning solution used had eaten into the original pigment. The same painting on the right is shown after careful removal of the remaining varnish and remedial work. The monetary value of paintings can go down, as well as up.

Consultation and Condition Reports. What we do not do. Watercolours and engravings can be cleaned. Paper discolouration, that is often brownish in colour, and sometimes caused by harmful acids and colour leaching from the backing board to the image, can be removed. Foxing, which are small brown dots, and vertical brown stains, that are generally air burns, can be treated and removed. Unsightly folds can be removed and new paper made to fit missing parts. Before and after cleaning and treatment.

Consultation and Condition Reports. What we do not do. The naïve painting on the left is shown as it came into the workshop, and after cleaning and other essential work on the right. However, if in doubt ask, preferably by e-mail with accompanying photograph.

Consultation and Condition Reports. What we do not do. The 19th century oil painting on the left is shown, after its owner had tried to clean it. It was brought to the Studio in the condition we see on the left. The image on the right is the same painting after correct cleaning and treatment. Before, and after cleaning and restoration.

Research
Monday, June 13, 2011. Breaking Meanings and Sustaining Disagreements. It is an obvious trend to observers that the conservation of contemporary art has become increasingly complex over the years. There is also an attendant awareness that traditional models of decision-making can sometimes be of a hindrance, even with the best of intentions. Symposium held at the Tropenmuseum (Royal Tropical Institute, Amsterdam), 9 - 11 June 2010. For more information on the symposium, click here. Poster (PDF; 567 KB).

Conservation News
Monday, January 23, 2012. Paper Through Time - University of Iowa. A very comprehensive and interesting research project looking at the chemical make-up and properties of historical European papers from 14th to 19th centuries. See the web-site for more -. The primary conclusion seems to be that the higher concentration of gelatin and calcium used in earlier paper-making seems to afford better long-term protection of historical papers. For a summary of the project, see the press release posted on. Saturda...
