Compass Rose: December 2005

Tuesday, December 20, 2005. Donald Miller: Christian Rationalism. Following my stinging attack on American Christianity I am going to follow it up with something very odd. Praise for it. A close friend of mine bought me a copy of a book called ‘Blue Like Jazz’ by Donald Miller who is an American Christian writer. Rather than calling for the assassination of another nations democratically elected sovereign leader he actually wishes to do some good with the idea of religion. Hope you enjoy it!

Wednesday, June 28, 2006. Watch this space. I wrote this during my lunch break. But now i've lost the order pad i wrote it on. Hope i didn't give it to a customer. Posted by Benjamin Nakizo @ 10:02 pm. Was everything ok for you? Very nice thank you". Good, so all together then that's going to be . 21.47 then please". But all I had was a breakfast! Yes, you had the Early Starter breakfast". That's not that much". You're right sir, the Early Starter is not that much. But you did have toast didn't you?

Compass Rose: November 2006

Wednesday, November 29, 2006. Guy from the Urals. I dread descending into prophetic poetry. The melodrama muscle stands ready. I need to fight back, reclaim the internal narrative of my mind. Why are words so ugly? Some might don backpacks and head out into the world, although that is coming more unlikely because in the global market place a year at Burger King and the ‘customer relations’ skills it entails is actually worth more on your CV. Dangerous isn’t it? But of course, that is just the pessimist i...

Compass Rose: March 2007

Saturday, March 31, 2007. Invasion of the Vorticons. I just stumbled across a rare internet treasure. A site that provides you with countless classic video games, for free. I went there originally to satisfy my demand for world conquest via the majestically educational Civilisation II (which should be made compulsory for all secondary school students). But what else did I find? COMMANDER KEEN: DEFENDER OF EARTH. Posted by Benjamin Nakizo @ 1:53 am. Friday, March 30, 2007. So as I was flicking through the...

Wednesday, December 27, 2006. In mid-January I get my three essay marks back. A single fail and I am off my Masters program. Anything between 40 50 and I get debunked to the humiliating ‘Post-graduate Diploma’. Why I am worried? I am worried because - and please believe me this is all without an ounce of inflated rhetoric - two of the three essays I handed in were the worst I have ever written in three and a half years. Why am I so confident of this fact? How did I let this happen? Don’t think so. Ho...

Saturday, February 18, 2006. What Would Jesus Do? He’s just flat wrong. We shouldn’t close Guantanamo said US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfield in reply to Kofi Ananan. We have several hundred terrorists, bad people, people who if they went back out on the field would try to kill Americans To close that place and pretend that really there’s no problem just isn’t realistic . Sidestepping the small issue of how 500 men taken prisoner during a war on terror are not actually prisoners of war . Wake up Ameri...

Friday, March 31, 2006. But yet I do have this strange feeling that Europe is a place full of weird and wonderful people that are somehow also our best hope for the future. We spent so long fighting each other over who controlled the earth, and it is only now when the earth is deciding that it would actually much rather rule itself that we are starting to come together in search of safety and comfort in an increasingly scary world. Ps Note the Turkish flag - Come on Turkey, you can do it. Perhaps one of ...

Tuesday, November 29, 2005. I have just spent the last 5 days in Baton Rouge celebrating Thanks giving with two good friends. I had a great time. I was able to eat my first Thanks giving Turkey, see Baton Rouge, get some Christmas shopping done in the sun and take a drive through New Orleans. I'd like to say thankyou to Amy who invited me down for the holiday. It's not every day I get to celebrate America's very own creation myth! I didn't. So when do they play their football games then? Its amazing to t...

Friday, January 20, 2006. I think it is only testimony to how few real worries I have in my life right now that I am letting US domestic policy frustrate me (which is amazing since this is the least of their recent crimes). Posted by Benjamin Nakizo @ 7:51 pm. Thursday, January 12, 2006. My conscience is playing up. The UK has poor people. Why? This seems to me to be a crime. We are one of the world’s strongest economies. People, even poor people, can pretty freely participate in the economy howe...So I’...

Monday, January 29, 2007. Beautiful people with such innocent dreams. Pure of heart and track records as white as the Alps they so frequently frequent. Imagine actually being good. That is a ridiculous concept - isn’t it? Spend five minutes on Myspace. Ask yourself just how rich are we? How bad things must have been back then. A million Charles Booth’s will rise. We will sympathetically vote liberal while directing our sat-navs around the Westside of town. City breaks and recycle boxes. The likes of ‘Los...
