Suffice to say, I have a complete breakdown of lines in Twelfth Night from the First Folio as to whether the character speaks prose, verse, or rhyme. When thinking of Falstaff in Shakespeare’s Henry IV plays, obvious comparisons arise to the Riot or Vice of the medieval morality play, the parable of the Prodigal Son from the Bible, and the Plautine braggart soldier. But Falstaff is more than just a combination of these, he is greater than the sum of his parts. What truly distinguishes Falstaff is his mode of speaking. Enjoy the random stuff about Falstaff. For use in any quantitative analysis of Shakespeare:. Http:/ sun1.rrzn.uni-hannover.de/ nhtni. Go to Statistical Data, and it will have a table (in German). WordAn is % of words by the character, ReplAn is % of lines. It is cool! It's the basis for my previous analysis of Shakespeare in 10th grade. I am considering embarking on what I have tentatively entitled "The Troupe Project" to try to determine the size, skill, and so on of the group of actors required by Shakespeare's plays. I did a previous, small scale version of this project back in 10th grade, using numerical data for how many lines the lead had, how many characters had large parts, etc. I think I will expand on this.
