Soil Conservation and Water Quality plans are developed by the District and provide an overview of a landowners operation. The Plan assists landowners in identifying, conserving and enhancing the natural resources on their property. Acquiring and applying a plan is free and voluntary (unless the farm is located in the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area, in Ag Land Preservation or participating in cost share programs). Since then the program has been expanded to include several other conservation oriented pieces of equipment. Most of the equipment is now tailored to the smaller farmer. Small farmers cannot always justify spending money on expensive equipment that is need for only a few acres and maybe only once a year. All three programs accomplish the goal of preserving valuable land by purchasing development rights while allowing the landowner to retain their property. The landowner is compensated for the sale of those rights on a per acre basis.
