Monday, November 29, 2010. Unveiling the Underlying Messages. I think it’s true that sometimes we would like to think that we live in a utopian society, where all people are treated equally and everything is always peaches and cream. However, that is far from the truth. The same perceptions of race, women, men, etc. are still reinforced into minds of our students today. Courtney's Compilation: Literacy in the Modern World

http://www.courtneywill.blogspot.com/2010/11/literacy-in-modern-world.html

Sunday, November 14, 2010. Literacy in the Modern World. I found Literacy Moves On. To be a very intriguing read. The “more modern” examples of literacy that it provided really helped me to understand the basis of this class. Because children are submerged into the pop culture, it is important that we as teachers meet them in the middle to help their learning experiences be more meaningful. Reading this article took me back to our literacy dig that we completed within the first couple weeks of class.

Courtney's Compilation: Learning THROUGH Experience

http://www.courtneywill.blogspot.com/2010/10/learning-through-experience.html

Sunday, October 17, 2010. Reading the article about situational learning through the empowerment model by Powell and Davidson took me back in time because I experienced a similar learning experience in second grade. My teacher had designed his classroom to function as a mini-economy. As students, we received a paycheck each week for completing both our homework and our designated jobs (e.g. board-eraser, line leader, attendance-taker, etc.). All businesses within the classroom were student run! This real...

Courtney's Compilation: Observing Literacy in the Classroom

http://www.courtneywill.blogspot.com/2010/10/observing-literacy-in-classroom.html

Sunday, October 10, 2010. Observing Literacy in the Classroom. Although our field experience has only been underway for two short weeks, I feel that I have already benefitted and accumulated more knowledge than I ever expected. Watching my cooperating teacher (whom I will call Mrs. Doe) teach has allowed to realize more than ever that literacy and the priniciples that surround the subject of language arts are truly embedded into every single aspect of our lives. Each week that I have been in her classroo...

Courtney's Compilation: MGRP Reflection

http://www.courtneywill.blogspot.com/2010/11/mgrp-reflection.html

Sunday, November 7, 2010. In each one of my classes, I have consistently heard about project-based learning, which creates a student-centered learning environment to allow students to construct their own knowledge. To me, the MGRP is a good example of such a project. While students have an opportunity to research material that is of interest to them, they also, perhaps unknowingly, are being introduced to many standards within language arts. Because many short stories that are included in literature book...

L549 Patti's Blog: Readings for 11/15

http://l549patti.blogspot.com/2010/11/readings-for-1115.html

Saturday, November 13, 2010. I traveled to China as a 10-year-old and spent a day in a school while I was there. How confusing! To be honest, I'm not entirely sure what I'm supposed to be getting from this reading other than an example of what can be done with different forms of literacy. If you'd like to see the actual multiliteracies map that's being discussed, I found it at an Australian website. November 15, 2010 at 12:08 PM. This is crazy, and Im not sure how I feel about it. First of all, the r...

L549 Patti's Blog: September 2010

http://l549patti.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

Sunday, September 26, 2010. Wow, what a practical bunch of chapters! Chapters 7-9 were just what I needed to clarify much of what I had been wondering about. Links to this post. Friday, September 24, 2010. So what to do? When you get a whole class of children who are so clearly behind in their ability to spell, what's the right course of action? And what's the best way to do that without stifling creativity? Am I back to traditional spelling tests? Links to this post. Sunday, September 19, 2010. The most...

bilblog: MGRP in Action

http://kikikazee.blogspot.com/2010/10/mgrp-in-action.html

Monday, October 18, 2010. Today was the first week of the School of Education’s Science Saturday program. After this week’s readings I had a much clearer picture of multi-genre usage within a single theme. I participated in this week’s installment of Science Saturday and was able to see firsthand the effects of multi-genre usage on the learning process. Though it was scheduled for between 9:30 am and 12 PM it ran a little long. The elementary students were divided into three groups, k-2nd, 3rd-4.

Saturday, November 6, 2010. We just have to put our poster presentation together. Yeah! Everyone remember to turn your clocks back tonight and get an extra hour of sleep. You'll need it for the final MGRP push! November 7, 2010 at 8:52 PM. I agree that some topics are better than others for this type of project. I was lucky with mine I suppose. Im looking forward to seeing your presentation! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Some Useful Educational Blogs. Mrs Mimi Taught Second Grade and Shares the Love.

Saturday, November 27, 2010. Links to this post. Friday, November 19, 2010. Is anyone else as excited about learning to edit videos as I am? While I can think of plenty of ways to use it in the classroom, I'm more interested in it from a personal perspective. I have tons of video that we've taken over the years, none of which has ever been viewed or edited. I realize that the tool we're using isn't that fancy, but just to learn the basics is exciting to me. Links to this post. Saturday, November 13, 2010.

Saturday, November 27, 2010. November 28, 2010 at 8:01 PM. I like your idea of finding something more positive to replace what we dont agree with. We cant control everything that kids are exposed to but we can express our opinions and encourage kids to think critically about not only media-related topics but also about proper ways to respond and behave. To Do the Write: MGRPs in Action

http://todothewrite.blogspot.com/2010/10/mgrps-in-action.html

To Do the Write. Monday, October 18, 2010. Perhaps I’m easy to catch, but I couldn’t help but notice the emphasis of teaching students “skills in context”. Perhaps that was by design, or it could simply be because my research for my own Multigenre Research Paper (MGRP) (which has unfortunately pushed this post to the periphery) has a focus on this point as well. Either way, it caught my attention. MGRPs, from both the book’s description and even in our short experience so far in doing one on our own.

To Do the Write: Dilemmas and Discourses

http://todothewrite.blogspot.com/2010/10/dilemmas-and-discourses.html

To Do the Write. Monday, October 4, 2010. I appreciated the attention which Karen Wohlwend’s article “Dilemmas and Discourses of Learning to Write: Assessment as a Contested Site” drew to the realities of teaching in an actual, student-filled setting. Her discussion of the “surface dilemmas,” or, “clashes between overlapping discourses,” experienced by actual, practicing teachers is a comfort to me (perhaps strangely) as an aspiring educator. In the particular case of New Jersey, where the current Govern...

bilblog: The Power of Multi-genre

http://kikikazee.blogspot.com/2010/11/power-of-multi-genre.html

Wednesday, November 24, 2010. The Power of Multi-genre. My experience with the multi-genre project was much different than I expected. I was prepared to learn more about multiculturalism and the benefits of building a multicultural classroom community. I believed this would come through investigation on my research paper. I did not have much confidence that the other genres would be as persuasive, nor would they provide any additional understanding. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Arthur J. Tippin.

Love and heartbreak in R&B. Thursday, May 26, 2011. Monday, May 23, 2011. Cold Case Love lyrics. Dark and I'm burning a rose. I don't need proof. I'm torn apart and numb. What you did to me was a crime. And I let you reach me one more time. Your love was breaking the law. But I needed a witness. So pick me up when it's over. It don't make any difference. Will it ever be solved. Or am I taking the fall. Truth was there all along. Tell me how did we miss it. We opened up a cold case love. We lost our way.
