Four Hills of Squash: August 2014
http://4hillsofsquash.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
Four Hills of Squash. Tuesday, August 26, 2014. The Kitchen Garden In Late August. There's very little bare dirt in the kitchen garden these days. The Winter Squash have claimed every last open space, making my daily watering routine a challenge. All of the tomatoes, with the exception of the " Bloody Butcher". Plant, have reached the top of the two-tier towers and are still growing. The " Heavenly Blue". I was able to harvest the first eight " Bumblebee. The " Black Plum". Pole bean has made a credible ...

Four Hills of Squash: First 60 degree Day of the Year - and a Record
http://4hillsofsquash.blogspot.com/2015/01/first-60-degree-day-of-year-and-record.html
Four Hills of Squash. Saturday, January 24, 2015. First 60 degree Day of the Year - and a Record. I caught on film the tail-end of an amazing, if slightly worrisome day. Today, while the East Coast turned white under a winter storm watch, we enjoyed sunny blue skies and a high of 68 degrees! Yes 68 degrees. That broke an 80 year old record. It certainly wasn't a day to be inside and everyone was enjoying the balmy weather. And for the third night in a row, we were treated to a lovely sunset. Cooking with...

Four Hills of Squash: July 2014
http://4hillsofsquash.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
Four Hills of Squash. Thursday, July 31, 2014. Down along the driveway, at the bottom of the hill, grows a lone "wild' apple tree. It isn't a pretty tree, having grown thin and tall over the years as it stretched through the firs toward the sunlight. One too many snowstorms has caused its top to bend back toward the ground. But it still blooms faithfully each Spring. Wednesday, July 30, 2014. Tuesday, July 29, 2014. Two New Dahlia Blooms. Monday, July 28, 2014. Sunday, July 27, 2014. Garlic that I harves...

Four Hills of Squash: Witch Hazels
http://4hillsofsquash.blogspot.com/2014/12/witch-hazels.html
Four Hills of Squash. Sunday, December 28, 2014. Well, it's just a few days after Christmas but both of our witch hazel plants are in full bloom. I have to blame this on the very warm and mild temperatures that we have enjoyed this past November and December. November had 20 days where the high exceeded 50 degrees and so far we have had 17 days over 50 degrees this month. In comparison, last year I wrote a post about the witch hazel blooms on January 18th, almost 3 weeks later than this year. Bumblebee T...

Four Hills of Squash: Another Sunny January Workday
http://4hillsofsquash.blogspot.com/2015/01/another-sunny-january-workday.html
Four Hills of Squash. Sunday, January 25, 2015. Another Sunny January Workday. Finally, a sunny day off with nothing planned. So it was time to get back to the mowing project that hadn't been touched since just after Christmas. We attacked the bank and "meadow" in front of the house. It was actually so warm, I had to keep stopping for water breaks and wore a baseball cap to keep the sun out of my eyes. Daffodils are just starting to come up as well. January 29, 2015 at 9:56 PM. Four Hills of Squash: Ordering Dahlia Tubers
http://4hillsofsquash.blogspot.com/2015/01/ordering-dahlia-tubers.html
Four Hills of Squash. Sunday, January 4, 2015. Well, today I broke my rule and I ordered new dahlia tubers before I completely finished dividing and storing last years! But I am so close to being done and it's now January. If I don't place my orders soon, tubers will start to sell out. So, I spent a pleasant hour or two on-line, looking over the latest releases and reviewing what tubers I need replace. Before I started I set a budget and then proceeded to pass it by $100! We have a sale here in the.
