From the Glaciers to the Ocean. In Anchorage we stopped for short sight seeing after lunch. Most of use used the chances for souvenir shopping and a restroom stop in the conference center near the visitor center where Eric checked for options for the next days. Wildlife And Wilderness Camping. Are you still alive? On the way back, the bus stopped a few more times for wildlife. We saw Mount McKinley (again), a wolf pack, a blond grizzley bear, some goats and a lot more common species. It was worth it. Sorry, unfortunatelly, most animals were quite far away. And can you imagine how much we loved the shower back on Carlo Creek C.G? Backcountry camping - wilderness experience. Drop out and pick up at the Denali N.P. visitor center at park entrance. We just stopped in Anchorage for a night. We arrived early evening. Sorry, but I had to do my laundry and so did Eric. So while the others were cooking and planing the night, we went to the next laundromat, which was about a 15 minutes drive. The place closed at 7pm. Not much time anyway. After dinner we went to town and enjoyed a movie call "What lies beneath" - nice horror movie . to funny to be scarry. Now off to McCarthy. We had a long drive ahead of us. Wrangell St. Elias N.P. Ice climbing in the middle of nowhere. Our story of McCarthy finally just had two chapters. Chapter one: Getting there and out. It's 96 miles drive from Chitina to McCarthy, all gravel road. You must drive in the middle of the road to be safe from sliding. Lots of small bump make most people drive slowly. But does it help? Thanx to Sandra (waiting for another briliant photo) and Trevor (spotting the bear) for this great bear shot. Lucky us we were inside the van (but Sandra wasn't). In the meantime . thanx Michele and Trevor for preparing dinner. We came to the campground after the flight. The camping is a big RV park. Not too many tents. Read about Skagway and the way back to Seattle on the ferry-page. SS Klondike guided tour. From Haines Junction (Pine Creek) drive Alaskan Hwy 1 east to Whitehorse. After Whitehorse take Hwy 2 south to Carcross. For Carcross continue on Hwy 2 south to Skagway. You will cross the border into the U.S. at White Pass. Efficient gear cleaning saves you a lot of time, which will allow you to see Skagway. Hope you have good (dry) weather and not too much wind in Whitehorse for the cleaning session.
