Frangokastello, Moni Prevali, and Phestos, Crete 1998. In the Easter holidays, i.e. the first 2 weeks of April, 1998 Bill, Rory, Jens Peter and I spent 2 super weeks on Crete. The second week we rented a car, which gave us a lot more freedom to travel farther afield. After we had hiked the Imbros Gorge. The massive outer walls of Frangokastello. Neo Horio, Crete 1998. In the Easter holidays, i.e. the first 2 weeks of April, 1998 Bill, Rory, Jens Peter and I spent 2 super weeks on Crete. On this trip we decided to see the western half of Crete and to try to discover the real island, away from the big tourist centres. Imbros Gorge, Crete 1998. The second week we rented a car, which gave us a lot more freedom to travel farther afield. We drove to Hora Sfakion. On the south coast. From the road through the White Mountains we could look down on the Imbros Gorge. On another day we hiked the Imbros Gorge (we were too early in the season to hike the Samaria Gorge; the danger of sudden floods is too high), then drove along the south coast eastwards to Frangokastello. And on to Moni Preveli. Before turning northward for home.

Diktanos Gorge and Chania, Crete 1998. In the Easter holidays, i.e. the first 2 weeks of April, 1998 Bill, Rory, Jens Peter and I spent 2 super weeks on Crete. The first week, we depended on the bus and our hiking boots for getting around. One day we all hiked to Stilos. We also took the bus into Chania one day, explored the market and old town, and had lunch in a restaurant on the harbour. We hiked from Neo Horio west to Stilos, then south to the trail through the Diktanos Gorge. Here is a close-up.
