CRPG Adventures

Wednesday, August 12, 2015. Moria: All The Good Things. Occasionally while I'm playing Moria. I feel as though I should be enjoying it more than I am. Sure, it's empty and huge, and a bit of a chore to play, but the game has so many innovations, and the list of things appearing in a CRPG for the first time ever is pretty big. I start to wonder if the problem lies with myself rather than the game. Am I playing it wrong? Am I unable to appreciate it because of my modern perspective? I've mentioned this in ...

CRPG Adventures: Colossal Cave Adventure (1976)

http://www.crpgadventures.blogspot.com/2015/06/colossal-cave-adventure-1976.html

Tuesday, June 2, 2015. Colossal Cave Adventure (1976). Though I'm net yet out of the PLATO RPG wilderness, it's time to move ahead to something entirely different. I haven't finished with Moria, and probably won't for a long time, but a blog needs to be fed. And so I come to Adventure. Also known as Colossal Cave Adventure. The first ever text adventure game. The original version of Adventure. The influence of Adventure. The question that faces me at this point is: which version should I play? Typing 'IN...

CRPG Adventures: Colossal Cave Adventure: Victory!

http://www.crpgadventures.blogspot.com/2015/07/colossal-cave-adventure-finished.html

Thursday, July 16, 2015. Colossal Cave Adventure: Victory! Readers may remember that in my last post I made a big song and dance about consulting a walkthrough to solve some puzzles, and how I was going to try my hardest not to do so in the future. Well, I did try my hardest, and apparently my hardest wasn't good enough. Yes, I completed Colossal Cave Adventure. But I certainly didn't do it on my own. I'm not sure what that bit about achieving the next higher rating is about. None of the sites I've c...

CRPG Adventures: August 2015

http://www.crpgadventures.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html

Friday, August 28, 2015. The Game of Dungeons (aka DND) v8.0 (1978). Back when I started The Game of Dungeons. I noted that there were two versions on cyber1's PLATO emulator. I played and finished version 6, but I said at the time that I would eventually revisit the game and play version 8. Since Moria. Is becoming a drag I figured that now is a good time. I'm glad I did, because version 8 is certainly different enough to merit some posts. In version 6 of The Game of Dungeons. Nathan P. Mahney. As it tu...

CRPG Adventures: May 2015

http://www.crpgadventures.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Monday, May 25, 2015. Upcoming Schedule: The 1970s. I haven't made much progress in Moria. And even if I had there would probably be very little worth mentioning. Instead I'm going to post my schedule for games I'm going to play from the 1970s. The list isn't set in stone. It might be incomplete. There might be games I can't find, or can't get to run. But for anyone looking to play along, here it is. The Game of Dungeons. Aka Colossal Cave Adventure. Journey to the Centre of the Earth Adventure. I intend...

SAVE OR DIE!: Save or Dying! And an Announcement

http://mahney.blogspot.com/2011/08/save-or-dying-and-announcement.html

Tuesday, August 30, 2011. Okay, first for the announcement. I was looking over my posts just now and I saw that I started blogging my way through the Monster Manual in September last year. That's unacceptable to me, so I'm forcing myself to start up the Ultimate Sandbox again. Expect the posts to start rolling in soon enough. Nathan P. Mahney. Labels: Death and Dying. Not a bad idea there. That is a tremendous idea. {yoink}. Nathan P. Mahney. Awesome, glad you guys liked it. Nathan P. Mahney.

SAVE OR DIE!: AD&D Monster Manual part 59

http://mahney.blogspot.com/2015/04/ad-monster-manual-part-59.html

Thursday, April 09, 2015. AD&D Monster Manual part 59. Giant wasps first appeared in Supplement II: Blackmoor. Spell Said victim would be paralyzed within an hour, and any movement other than teleportation would kill him outright. In AD&D, the victim now gets a saving throw. If he fails he is paralyzed permanently, with death occurring after 2-5 days (either from the paralysis, or from being eaten by the wasp's larva). Neutralize poison. Still works as a cure, as does a nebulously defined "antidote".

Nathan P. Mahney: August 2014

http://nathanpmahney.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Tuesday, August 19, 2014. Figuring Out Why I Don't Write Enough. Since my last post, I have written 728 words of The Lightless Labyrinth. So why don't I write more? I work a full-time job, which takes up most of my time. I could get a lot of writing done without this, but quitting or dropping my hours isn't an option; I do have a family to feed after all. I try to make that time as productive as I can, by listening to podcasts and audiobooks. I don't think there's much I can do about this one. It's been ...

Nathan P. Mahney: September 2014

http://nathanpmahney.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Monday, September 29, 2014. Remember how in my last post I tried to identify the reasons that I don't write enough? Remember how I made all those grandiose plans to rectify the problem? Well, forget about that business, because I sure did in a hurry. From August 24th to September 28th I did no writing at all, unless you count shopping lists and crossword puzzles. Came back. Wrestling happened. I've been a busy beaver, just not in a way that translates into productivity. And you know what?

Nathan P. Mahney: The Charles Atlas Method: End of Week Four

http://nathanpmahney.blogspot.com/2015/04/the-charles-atlas-method-end-of-week_12.html

Sunday, April 12, 2015. The Charles Atlas Method: End of Week Four. Lesson 3 was nice and easy, with nothing more than a trio of stretching exercises. Did they strengthen my inner abdomen, as they were supposed to? There's no way of knowing, unless I rupture my insides at some point during the next lot of exercises; then I'll know it failed. I'm going to spare my readers any photos of my lily-white chest this week. It's cold, and I don't want to get out from under my doona. Maybe next week. Sit-ups, alth...

Nathan P. Mahney: The Charles Atlas Method: End of Week Six

http://nathanpmahney.blogspot.com/2015/04/the-charles-atlas-method-end-of-week-six.html

Sunday, April 26, 2015. The Charles Atlas Method: End of Week Six. Okay It's time to reset. It may come as no surprise to people who know me personally, or even those rare souls who have been following this blog for any length of time, but I have not been taking this Charles Atlas project seriously. I started it in good faith, and every intention of following the instructions to the letter. As often happens with projects that I take up, my dedication has wavered. So where to from here? Your Adventure End...

Nathan P. Mahney: October 2014

http://nathanpmahney.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Sunday, October 26, 2014. The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan. I finished this book months ago, and I really ought to have gotten to this by now, but time has slipped away from me. You'll have to forgive me if I'm a little vague on the details, because. Wait. Hang on. This is The Eye of the World. Book one of The Wheel of Time. I've probably read this thing ten times or more. No worries, then, I've got this sorted. So, Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time. Make no mistake, The Wheel of Time. I probably haven'...

The CRPGDEV.COM blog

The CRPGDEV.COM blog. Return to Xebec's Demise. Saturday, 25 July 2015. Is it really over six months since my last blog post and even longer since my last game upload? You might have wondered if I was still interested in CRPGs and game development or whether I had hit some serious problem in my personal life. I'm pleased to report that there have been no major disasters but plenty of other things have taken up my time and my personal interests including my game development has suffered as a result. Thank...
