The stuff of life. Riding my bike through town I came across a piece of art that caught my heart at 24th and Bryant. My friend posted a photo of it and it churned my feelings into words. These words, about this town I call home. Located at 24th and Bryant. I am no local. I moved to The Mission in 1994 or 95 I think. I had a little studio on Shotwell Street by 19. Street and Alabama is the sunniest place in town. There was a pay phone there once upon a time and I sat next to that phone with a pocket f...

The stuff of life. Him:”um, can I ask you something? Me: “sure.”. He takes an tortuously S L O W survey of the ramp. He looks back at the sidewalk, stares at a scuffed spot on the wall and then bends down and puts his hand about 4 inches back from where my backwheel is, looks up at me and states very slowly: “What would you think if your backwheel was let’s say….right here? 8221; I respond, “Do you mean my frame should be extended? Or you want me to move my bike back so you can skate the ramp? After extr...

Runaway Kitchen: A friend asks for a recipe, I post
http://runawaykitchen.blogspot.com/2011/10/friend-asks-for-recipe-i-post.html
Thursday, October 13, 2011. A friend asks for a recipe, I post. I'm trying to make it a new policy that when a friend asks for a recipe that I post it here. I could be saying "if I had a nickel." it happens so often, but instead I'm trying to find a system that binds me to my original goal with this blog- to write about the foods that I'm inspired by right now and give recipes. I hope that my friends continue to ask me for recipes- I do love giving them out. In a good sized wok, heat up your 5 pounds of ...

Runaway Kitchen: Summer picnic salad, crab season practice, lamb's quarters
http://runawaykitchen.blogspot.com/2012/06/summer-picnic-salad-crab-season.html
Thursday, June 14, 2012. Summer picnic salad, crab season practice, lamb's quarters. Well, I've managed to neglect the blog for nearly half a year. If it were a garden it would be bursting with nettles, blackberry vines and horsetail by now. Yum, actually. Last weekend we had a potluck barbecue at the beach and I opted to throw a side of Copper River Sockeye. I have a very big party I'm cooking for on glorious Lopez Island late this summer and one of the things we'll be cooking up is locally caught crab.

Runaway Kitchen: June 2015
http://runawaykitchen.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Tuesday, June 9, 2015. Doogh, summer heat and my favorite salt. The sunny, lazy days of summer are here a bit early this year. Spring has more summer than in it than I've experienced in a while and all of Seattle is responding in kind with tank tops, ice cream strolls and grocery stores running out of ice. I just made my self a tasty batch and sip away while the fan blows my hair, Chavela Vargas. Croons and I type away on my dusty old blog. Makes enough for 2. 1 cup 2T cold water. Splash of club soda.

Sunday, November 14, 2010. November Comfort Dining- Japan and Korea. Well, another beautifully dreary month and another comforting menu that, with any luck, would make you excited the sun goes down at 4 pm leaving you hours and hours to sup on dinner before bedtime. In keeping with the theme I set out to turn into a triptych, this month will be homey stews and things your auntie would make to stick to your ribs. Well, your Korean auntie. Soondubu Jigae – This lovely Korean stew gets its heat from t...

Runaway Kitchen: Teff Waffles and the Beauty of the Kitchen Mistake
http://runawaykitchen.blogspot.com/2014/01/teff-waffles-and-beauty-of-kitchen.html
Sunday, January 19, 2014. Teff Waffles and the Beauty of the Kitchen Mistake. This is a recipe born out of a kitchen mistake. I make many but, considering the volume of cooking I turn out every day, they're to be expected. And they delight me when they produce a good recipe or prove a bit of the culinary chemistry. Learning moments. I have recently fallen head over heels for a website/brand/recipe source called Food52. Food52 provided me with a tidy little recipe. So I drained off the thick liquid meant ...
