Cultivating Paradise: Garden of Eatin'

http://cultivatingparadise.blogspot.com/2014/05/the-other-day-i-was-visiting-with.html

Gardening in Deep South Texas. Sunday, May 25, 2014. This is what we picked this morning. You can see that our tomatoes are doing well. I always try to pick them when they are just beginning to color. Otherwise, the mockingbirds get more of the crop than we do. They like to sit on the pasture fence and wait for them to be juicy and tasty. Tomatoes can finish ripening on the kitchen counter and still taste vine-ripened. There are a few things you can do to increase your success with tomatoes. It's all abo...

Cultivating Paradise: April 2014

http://cultivatingparadise.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html

Gardening in Deep South Texas. Tuesday, April 22, 2014. I wasn't quick enough to get a picture, but yesterday morning, a cardinal was perched in one of these tiny trees. As I watched, it fluttered over and checked out two others. Maybe we won't have to wait another 10 or 15 years after all. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Cultivating Paradise: Stunning Butterfly Host

http://cultivatingparadise.blogspot.com/2014/06/stunning-butterfly-host.html

Gardening in Deep South Texas. Saturday, June 21, 2014. When I say stunning, I'm not talking about the heliconus butterflies but instead their host plant, Passion Vine or May-pops. There are many varieties of passion vine and this one is Passiflora incarnata. It's leaf has three lobes and it's flower is a stunning purple and white beauty. Must be a gift from God. http://cultivatingparadise.blogspot.com/2009/03/texas-mountain-laurel-mescal-bean.html

Gardening in Deep South Texas. Saturday, March 14, 2009. Texas Mountain Laurel (Mescal Bean). During much of the year, Texas Mountain Laurel,. Is easily overlooked. But in March, this small accent tree is a show stopper. That's when you will find them covered with huge clusters of purple flowers. Oh, but what a reward this tree gives in March! The wisteria-like blooms smell like grape soda and attract bees and butterflies alike! This tree is just beginning to bloom. Mountain Laurel will produce its b...

Orlando Flowers Part 2. March 6, 2012 at 7:51 pm ( Gardening. To start with, flowers were not the only way to make an impact. Foliage was very important in the mass plantings. First is the variegated shell ginger with knockout roses. The next photo shows variegated shell ginger with macho ferns in front. Of course there were stands of the red ti plant (Cordyline teminalis) all through the area. I have a few of these plants, and this year, I will make sure to group them all together for a bigger impact.

Dodging the Weather Bullet. February 12, 2012 at 5:26 pm ( Weather. By Jan in Covington, Louisiana. All of the daylilies have started showing new growth, and as I was protecting other tender tropical plants, I was keeping my fingers crossed hoping this new growth wouldn’t be harmed by the freeze. After it warmed up, I went to check on things, and all the daylilies were fine – the newly emerging ones as well as the evergreen ones that have new growth. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Easter Blooms | Always Growing

https://alwaysgrowing.wordpress.com/2009/04/13/easter-blooms-2

April 13, 2009 at 6:04 am ( Flowers. By Jan in Covington, Louisiana. I hope everyone had a lovely Easter. We had a pleasant day, but last night, thunderstorms came through that kept us awake for hours. Luckily, there was no damage, and we did need the rain. The Easter bunny didn’t leave any eggs or chocolate here, but that is okay (can’t use the extra calories anyway), and I’ll take new flowers anyway. You have to agree that this was a lovely Easter present from Mother Nature. April 13, 2009 at 6:07 am.

With an abundance of fresh basil, I recently made basil salt several different ways along with fresh pesto using the tiny tasty leaves of Pistou basil. In place of pine nuts I used salt and pepper flavored pistachios I had on hand I bought from Yvonne and Fidel at the farmers market. After several requests to share the recipes - I decided to post here - follow the links below. With Fresh Basil Salt.

Musings of a South Texas Herb Gardener. Friday, November 29, 2013. For the Birds - Not. Have you tried Netting? You may not be able to see the fine black netting covering this tomato plant (some of it is bunched up on the left hand side) but I went ahead and draped this over a couple of the tomato cages as tomatoes are ripening and the birds started pecking them. Not what I enjoy finding in the garden early in the morning. Net covering tomato plant to deter birds. Links to this post. To tell much differe...

Musings of a South Texas Herb Gardener. Sunday, October 20, 2013. First Ripe Tomatoes of our Fall Garden - Whoo-Hoo! Our Felicity tomato plant is doing great - I have a couple other different tomato plants with green tomatoes on and some with flowers only. We'll be planting a grafted tomato plant we got at the Master Gardeners Conference trade show. I've heard of them but this will be the first I've tried. It's recommended to NOT refrigerate fresh picked tomatoes. These may not even make it to the house.
