En el momento de la liberación, el Ejército Rojo halló 600 muertos y 7.650 sobrevivientes, entre ellos cerca de cien niños, a quienes se había dejado con vida porque estaba previsto emplearlos en experimentos médicos. El segundo campo, denominado Auschwitz II, o Birkenau, se construyó a 3 km. del campo original, en marzo de 1941.
