CURMUDGUCATION: Evaluating Evaluation

http://curmudgucation.blogspot.com/2015/08/evaluating-evaluation.html

Saturday, August 8, 2015. When discussing the current flock of evaluation tools, both for teachers and for schools, the defense always seems to work back around to this:. How are we going to know which teachers and schools are doing well or not? It's better than nothing, and we have to do something. What are the characteristics of a good evaluation system? How can we evaluate the evaluation? Here are the traits that are essential for a useful, viable, good evaluation system. Give the community voice.

CURMUDGUCATION: Neighborhood Failure Factories

http://curmudgucation.blogspot.com/2015/08/neighborhood-failure-factories.html

Friday, August 14, 2015. I am a big believer in the concept of neighborhood schools. I think schools are best as an extension of their communities. I've written pretty about why I see charterizing initiatives such as those in New Orleans as both bad educational practice and an assault. On fundamental American values. At the same time, it's important that I acknowledge the limits of the approach that I value so much, and nothing has highlighted those failings any better than this gut-wrenching story.

CURMUDGUCATION: Teacher "Shortage" Coast to Coast

http://curmudgucation.blogspot.com/2015/07/teacher-shortage-coast-to-coast.html

Sunday, July 26, 2015. Teacher "Shortage" Coast to Coast. Talk of teacher shortages has been popping up on a state-to-state basis, so I thought I'd engage in a rare act of actual data collection. I'm working from two basic sources here: 1) a report from USED. That actually goes back to 1991, but we'll just focus on the present and 2) my research assistant, Dr. Google, with which I'll check for "OMGZ! We haz got no teechurz! Stories for each state. Let's see how we're all doing, shall we? USED says that A...

CURMUDGUCATION: PA: Legislator Misunderstands School Costs

http://curmudgucation.blogspot.com/2015/07/pa-legislator-misunderstands-school.html

Saturday, July 25, 2015. PA: Legislator Misunderstands School Costs. Not just any legislator. Today we're talking about Mike Folmer. Folmer is the Vice-chair of the Education Committee, a businessman (seems to mostly have worked in sales) who was first elected in 2006, one of the many "reform" candidates swept in after Pennsylvanians snapped under the final straw of the legislatures infamous late night Give Themselves A Raise shenanigans (an event infamous enough to get its own wikipedia page. Folmer cit...

Those who can, teach. My People: Sustaining a Teaching Life by Staying Connected With My Tribe. Posted in nyc schools. With a nudge from Donna JT Smith. I’m jumping back into Two Writing Teachers’ Slice-of-Life Challenge. 8212;————————. We’re in the last week of the NYC Writing Project Invitational Summer Institute. I can’t believe we’ve gotten here so quickly. 8221; I can’t help it; every summer, it’s the truth. When that Fellow thanked me for helping him find his people, I told him that we can get thro...

Those who can, teach. Free-writing with students terrifies me. I always think at some point the fear of the first free-write will subside, and instead of inwardly panicking while my students gape at me in horror – Y. Ou’re asking us to write? 8211; I’ll remember that I’ve done this before and no one died. But no, I can’t convince myself of that on Day One; even as I reassure my students that they can do this, my inner freakout perfectly mirrors their outer. What am I going to write about? What to Tell the Neighbors: Reasons matter: homeschooling, unschooling, and priorities

http://whattotelltheneighbors.blogspot.com/2013/05/reasons-matter-homeschooling.html

What to Tell the Neighbors. A blog about unschooling and living as an atheist in the Bible Belt. Thursday, May 2, 2013. Reasons matter: homeschooling, unschooling, and priorities. Homeschoolers come to homeschooling for different reasons. I get that. But I do think some reasons for homeschooling are better than others. It is better to homeschool because one cares about children's well-being than because one wants to exercise certain parental rights. John Holt, the former teacher and founder of. Reveals m...

Those who can, teach. I’m going to give you a little dude, I announced, holding up a handful of paper rectangles. On each is the empty outline of a cartoonish body. Now, be kind to this little dude. Don’t draw on his face, or crumple him up, or poke him with your pencil. In every class, this gets a chuckle. This little dude is Junior. He’s going to live in your notebook. Does everyone’s Junior have a home? What are we focusing on today? Someone called out, every class. Junior’s internal conflicts his per...

An Engineer's Take on Life

An Engineer's Take on Life. This guy's theme music hasn't started yet. Thursday, October 11, 2012. The Art of Hiring. Over the years, I've been asked to interview lots of candidates for technical positions. Having had no guidance in this process, I've had to learn from my mistakes. Here's what I learned:. Have zero tolerance for spelling and grammar mistakes on the resume. Hey, if a candidate can't get it right on this important document, he won't get it right on the job. See my first impression. CURMUDGUCATION

A grumpy old teacher trying to keep up the good classroom fight in the new age of reformy stuff. Saturday, August 15, 2015. VAM on Trial in NY. If you don't know Sheri Lederman's name, you should. She's the New York teacher who, with her lawyer husband, dragged VAM into a courtroom this week and gave it the beatdown it so richly deserved. Because of the importance of the case, lots of folks were there to watch. Carol Burris has a great account. In The Answer Sheet, and this blog by Alexndra Milleta.
