Tales from a Damascus immigree. Back in the game: update →. April 30, 2011 · 2:19 pm. Back in the game. Today Damascus is covered with the debris of a storm. Leaves and flowers blown from the trees are adhering to the film of rain on the pavements. The sky is grey and though it’s early afternoon I have the lights on in my living room. So when we finally got on the road, I asked the driver what the situation in Damascus was like. “Fine, fine, no problem,” he replied. Where was he from? Back in the game.

It’s a coming of age story about a boy in Beirut in the 1970s, growing up as civil war brews. The film’s playful, but full of foreboding – an atmosphere which resonates here in Damascus.
