The Camel's Knees

Tuesday, July 14, 2009. I often write about the concept of solidarity. But there is one aspect of Malian culture that’s not so “solid.” Talibizey. As they are called in Gao, are garibou. Or young students of the Koran who study under a Maribou. To learn humility and to gain their daily bread, they are forced to beg door to door for either a portion of cooked food, some grain or a few coins. Whatever they earn they are instructed to bring back and share with all the other garibous. Would then be comically...

The Camel's Knees: January 2009

http://www.danceduchess.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

Tuesday, January 20, 2009. The Things They Carried. I do believe the number of motos in the capital has increased noticeably since I've been here. Especially the Chinese made "Jakarta" motos. I can't imagine what it would be like to a Malian, like the one who I met in CDG, who had left for France in 1988 and hasn't been back until now. What amuses me are the items one frequently sees being carried/dragged with a moto:. The family (Mommy, Daddy, and three kids). A HUGE mess of bean leaves. And realized yo...

The Camel's Knees: December 2008

http://www.danceduchess.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html

Wednesday, December 10, 2008. Here a liver, there a liver. The walk over to Diallo's house the morning of Tabaski was not for the faint of heart. Everyone had been to mosque for the mass-prayer and had already sacrificed their sheep. Therefore, it was a matter of dodging pools of blood and various entrails in the road as I made way through the Château d'Eau. Neighborhood in my basin. 160;dress all nicely embroidered and shiny. It's fun to suppay. May the new year come! War kaa yeesi, m'ir alhaanan! The f...

The Camel's Knees: April 2008

http://www.danceduchess.blogspot.com/2008_04_01_archive.html

Wednesday, April 30, 2008. At least I went home to a fantastic meal made by Zubbu. Ouijila-like sauce but with potatoes. Tué, the old man, joked he hadn't had potatoes since independence. Ha. . So, in Gao, aside from earning sympathy points for having survived two visits to the regional hospital and remaining nosocomial illness free, I am resting and catching up on recent care package DVDs amassed at the PC house. Woo. Saturday, April 26, 2008. He was practically sticking his hand into the bita. Here&#82...

a charlatanical memoir: Apartment pictures!

http://maliorbust.blogspot.com/2007/12/apartment-pictures.html

This is Michele and my new apartment in NW DC:. The kitchen isn't a separate room, it actually makes up the back of the living room (I love that). And its a pretty sweet kitchen too. Granite counters, stained concrete floors. We haven't hung anything on the walls yet, but we've got some awesome stuff from Africa to hang up, plus we plan on printing and framing some of our photos from Mali. Our window out onto the world of Giant the supermarket with our dinky yet lovable Christmas tree. Our Map of Mali.

http://maliorbust.blogspot.com/2007/12/snow-day-dc.html

Ok, to start out with, I am a very bad person for not updating more frequently. I deserve your harsh words - especially those of you who might still read this living in Africa - that is, if any of you even bother anymore. Interesting tidbit of the day: false-consensus effect:. This explains why madmen like Bill O'Reilly believe in their 'War on Christmas'. Written by Outlaw Torn. On Wednesday, December 05, 2007. Ahh snowtime in DC.how I love thee. Miss you and talk to you soon! 2:31 AM, January 02, 2008.

a charlatanical memoir: October 2007

http://maliorbust.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

An interesting experience from Mali translated into my perception of events elsewhere - it really is amazing how just a brief time immersed in a foreign culture can alter one's own outlook. Needless to say, it was a simple mistake we made that ended no worse other than some slight embarassment and a quick correction. I only wish the same was true everywhere. Signal, the palm of the hand projected forward with all fingers together and straight up. Please tell me its not the fact that I've actually lived i...

Corned Mutton Helper. Mm-mmm good. About a half hour from Niena, we didn't just hit the tiger-trap of a pothole, we rammed it straight on. Our right front tire exploded and a brief moment later we were pulled to the side of the road comparing the flatness of that tire with the flatness of the spare. It looks like this pit stop is going to last a considerable bit longer than normal. Mom/Dad, if you get this before you send your package, could you please include a car adapter for an iPod. We do not hav...

On the Eve of the Presidential Elections. At first I was sad that Michele and I would be spending the weekend of the Malian Presidential elections in Bamako away from our village, but once we got into the capital a few days ago we saw that things would be nice here in the city. Anyways, the elections are tomorrow, they seem to be a lot more exciting here in the city with its diversity of thought. Can't wait to see what becomes of this whole thing. a charlatanical memoir: ET

http://maliorbust.blogspot.com/2007/06/et.html

Yes, ladies and gentlemen we have officially quit and are now in the U.S. I must admit thus far the whole experience seems pretty surreal. Anyway, there was only so much I could take in terms of being extremely unhealthy. Right before we left, in addition to the kidney stones, I also accrued malaria (again) and then giardia. Which ended up equaling about 15-20 pills per day. It felt like I was a 90 year old trying to hold onto life, when hello- - I am 24. So where do we go from here? Said, sometimes it i...

a charlatanical memoir: November 2006

http://maliorbust.blogspot.com/2006_11_01_archive.html

Riding on the wave of conservativism. Tim replies back in Bambara 'no' and we walk on. the people here are so bold in terms of asking for money or your things. I have been asked several times to give someone my watch, or even my shirt. 'Hey, I like your shirt. Give it to me.'. Now in my opinion, it is not entirely the Malians' fault for thinking that it is okay to just come up and ask for your things or your money. they are. On Friday, November 24, 2006. A "Lemons into Lemonade" Thanksgiving. Kind of mea...
